BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at a college in Virginia on Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. The gunman also was killed, and more than a dozen other people were injured.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Charles Steger, president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, in southwest Virginia. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”

The shootings spread panic and confusion at the college, which is popularly known as Virginia Tech. Witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire.

Authorities said the gunman was dead after he shot nearly 50 people at two locations on campus. Twenty-one were confirmed dead, NBC News reported. At least 28 others were injured, at least four of whom were in critical condition, NBC affiliate WSLS-TV in nearby Roanoke reported, quoting local hospital officials.

Over 50, when you coulnt the wounded.

This guy went in with a mission. If guns were allowed on campus, he may have been dropped before it got so horrible.

The last count I heard was 33 dead and 29 injured I think. Just depressing. Looks to me like there's still a question of whether the two shootings were even related but they may just be hedging their bets. Odd that a man and woman were shot in the dorm and then two hours later (ostensibly) the same guy would start a bloodbath at classes across campus. OTOH some folks is just deranged.

BLACKSBURG, VA. — Virginia Tech police today identified the shooter who took 32 lives as well as his own Monday in the worst gun rampage in U.S. history as Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old South Korean national and resident alien who was a senior English student at the university.

Cho's body was found in one of four classrooms in Norris Hall where he took most of his victims, said Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell R. Flinchum.

Police said Cho used two guns in the classroom building, where the bulk of the killings occurred. Authorities said they found two handguns, including a 9-millimeter, in the classroom where Cho's body was found when the shooting ended.

Ballistic tests showed that one of the guns was also the one that was used to shoot and kill the two victims in the dormitory about two hours before the slaughter in Norris Hall, police said.

"It's certainly reasonable for us to assume that Cho was the shooter in both places," Flinchum said. But he said police had not entirely ruled out the possibility that there were two shooters.

A press conference held on campus this morning also left many questions unanswered: What was Cho's motive? Why did school officials not notify the student body of the early two killings before the disaster in Norris Hall? Did Cho have any help in preparing for his rampage?

Charles Steger, president of Virginia Tech. announced that classes would be canceled for the week and Norris Hall, an engineering building where all but two of the killings occurred, would be closed for the rest of the semester.

It seems they are being careful not to call this terrorism.
This all seems very suspicious to me.

Where have you seen any evidence that it might be terrorism. Well, okay, I suppose that technically, anything like this could be considered a terrorist act but I don't see anything like a political agenda. I think it's probably like Gonz says. He killed his ex and her new BF and decided "he was already fucked so he may as well take some brainiacs with him." Of course, he was one of the braniacs but I don't see that it matters.

yep, and since most koreans are full-on gospel christians, it MUST be terrorism, right? that's where the suspicion comes in.

He was an English major --- if he was pissed at profs and students, why didn't he go there. He chose the Engineering Building for some reason.

Maybe his girlfriend had a thing for engineers.

By the way, his roommate was an engineer student. And, apparantly he had a grudge against "rich kids". Since, it seems, he stuck to himself he might have had more out of class contact with engineer students through his roommate?
