So, if we can't afford it, Borrow more?
I think not.

Estimates of the House Democrats' plan range from $1 trillion to $1.5 trillion over 10 years, with much of the cost offset by a surtax on the wealthy. As Republicans railed against the package, a Senate committee voted on another version of a health care overhaul, becoming the first congressional panel to do so.

Where does the 'borrowing' end?

President Obama accused his health care critics of "defending the status quo," as he tried Wednesday to build momentum for a comprehensive reform package to pass the House and Senate in a matter of weeks.
"This is a problem that we can no longer defer," Obama said, flanked by nurses. "Deferring reform is nothing more than defending the status quo -- and those who would oppose our efforts should take a hard look at just what it is that they're defending."

no mr. pres., wanting 'a different path' to fixed the problems does not equal 'wanting the status quo'.

Government estimates needs to be, traditionally, tripled, to get a more realistic estimate.

Anybody wanna bet that nobody reads this bill either?

If by 'status quo' he means housing market growing, 5% unemployment, and the Dow Jones at 14,000 - aka last year - then I don't see what was wrong with that. I liked that status quo a lot more than it is now.

Last year shit was headed downhill fast as hell. Shit is leveling off a bit now.

I'm concerned with overexertion. Right now, I would say the economy is priority number 1 for federal money and focus. Is a huge tax on the wealthy the best thing for this country now? Absolutely not, we all know that deficit spending and tax cuts will encourage business growth. So that means this federal healthcare is someone's pet project that they want to get pushed through Congress quickly. Same thing with "climate change" (funny how Global Warming became Climate Change almost overnight, isn't it?). Argue back and forth all you want, but mandating hybrid cars (which require huge amounts of Lithium, most of which comes from some South American country with a dictator) and other goofy environmental regulations is not exactly going to jump-start business.

We're driving along the highway, and the engine stalled, but we put it in neutral and now we're coasting. Are we gonna try to run the starter, or are we going to look out the windows, adjust the radio, and put the A/C on? Prioritize. Can ending the recession wait? No. Can changing the climate, and socializing healthcare? Yup.

Actually fixing healthcare could be a giant help to the economy and addressing global warming needs to be done and could create a lot of new jobs.

So really they should be addressed asap.

Well, yea.

Vice President Joe Biden told people attending an AARP town hall meeting that unless the Democrat-supported health care plan becomes law the nation will go bankrupt and that the only way to avoid that fate is for the government to spend more money.

“Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’” Biden said. “The answer is yes, that's what I’m telling you.”

Government health care will kill private insurance, no matter what President Obama says about keeping yours if you like it.
"Except as provided in this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first day" of the year the legislation becomes law.

What I think it means is that you cannot change your plan once the bill takes effect and you are mid-period....kind of like insurance is now--have to wait until renewal. I would imagine insurance policies would change their terms to meet the later-mentioned plan requirements to stay listed in the Exchange. They are for-profit, afterall, so I don't think they'll go without a fight. Maybe a gov-levied fine would actually increase business as people are forced into the market for insurance.

As for the 80k unemployed person getting dinged for 2k for no insurance, I'm required by law to carry auto insurance or get fined...just as much of a crock if you ask me. Just get the insurance and cancel it...works at the DMV, right?

Guess I can't see how anyone could sleep at night (or hell, even drive a car) willfully living without insurance (I'm talking by choice, not by those who cannot afford it).

...and they should get the hell out of NYC.... :D

I never had a job, but what I didn't get insurance.
Of coarse I've always work moderately dangerous jobs.
Like Mirlyn says, it doesn't make sense, but being forced in a desk job environment....
I guess it'd depend on the employer, but I've never had one that didn't require it, or either provide it.

Car ins is different IMO. Driving is usually on Public roads, so...

The problem is when the Gov gets into the insurance business, and we are getting there quick.

If you can afford to pay your doctor, why should you be forced to aquire insurance? Just to please some beauracrat. Bullshit.

That says get in now or forever stay out. Otherwise, a provision would be made for later enrollments.

This is not for your sake Gonz because I am sure no amount of logic and reason can penetrate....

A lot of people could afford to pay for their average medical costs out of pocket, but one day they are driving, say in the winter with the whole family in the car. The car hits an icy patch and goes out of control and down an embankment, and you, your two urchins and the wife are all hurt very badly. You only have liability car insurance!!! If you figure that going to an ER for dehydration is about a $500 bill, I dare not dream of what four very seriously injured people, ER and trauma care through discharge will be. This is all care that the hospital HAS to provide regardless of your inability to pay. Suffice to say $10K is probably insanely conservative, probably much more like 50-500K. Well guess what? If you were to pay it, you could sell your house, your cars, all that you own and still have a bill owing. Nobody can live without a house though, and you have to have a car to get to work when you recover.

Long story short, more often than not, folks in such situations either file bankruptcy, or can't or don't pay and get thrown in collections. Nobody plans an accident. The icy patch wasn't insured....Hell its tight times for most folks, and if it isn't for you, you goddamn well ought to feel blessed.

The bottom line though, is all those unpaid medical bills get passed on to you the next time and everybody else! If people don't have to have it, they often won't. That is why car insurance was made mandatory, and that is why there is a lot of sound logic to extend that to the health care industry.

Hopefully this simple dose of logic didn't fry anyone's mind. I know thinking things all the way through and considering the bigger picture is nearly impossible for hardcore conservatives, but I am sure you are immune from caring anyway.

Mr Fixit to the rescue:

Pay for your "daily" medical bills with cash.
Buy a catastrophic policy, far less expensive (since it isn't required to pay for the pill & a shrink because your mommy didn't love you enough).
Why do you think you purchase a home? It's to be an ASSET in case of catastrophy. You needn't buy a home when renting in available.
We have high medical bills. They get paid, right along with everything else. Wanna know why? Because it's not your responsibility to pay my bills.

"Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated." - Thomas Jefferson, 1798

And you TOTALLY IGNORE the FACT, that all of what I posted above still costs you personally, money, because the rest of the world isn't as perfact as Gonz and those silly bastards just won't behave!
