Someone moved out and left their dog

I think.
This little terrier has been hanging around outside for three days. He's wearing a collar, but no tags. I tried to catch him, but he will not let me touch him. He walked right up to my 80# sheepdog and sniffed him ...but he seems to be too scared of people to let me even pet him. I gave him some treats and a dish of chicken ala king. It's killing me that this little dog is out there all by himself.

Something like that happened to us this week: Tuesday afternoon, my father let our dog outside, like usual, he always goes in the rear yard. But he saw another dog in the other side of the street, so he went to see (or smell) it, nearly getting hit by a car (luckily our house is near an intersection, so traffic isn't too fast). Some kids passing by there yelled at it to move away from the street, and he ran away afraid like mad. We searched all night on the nearby streets and couldn't find it.

We moved to our current house 3 months ago, and the police retrieved our dog 5 hours after we lost him, he was going back to our old house :confuse3: which is around 5km away. At -25 C, he was nearly frozen, but we were pretty lucky to find it back alive...

I hate people. It's like the schmuk who hit my cat with his car. Prick couldn't stop to check to see if the little guy was even alive. Just kept right on going.

Well, I finally captured him.. He bit the crap out of my hands, but I wrapped him in a blanket and held him till he calmed down. He's really skinny. I think he may have been out there longer than 3 days. I'll check the paper today and call the shelter to make sure nobody is looking for him. I'll post a pic in a few.

I hate to mention this right now, but you may have to get a tetanus shot. Another bad thing would be rabies...and there's only one way to find out if the dog has rabies, and that is to have it put down so they can see it's brain cells. You probably would've done better by calling animal control...:(

Why are you so concerned for the dog if he did that?

I know dogs, and that's not the way to do it. What you do is take your time and build some trust. You don't grab a stray. You talk to it and take your time taming it. Never just grab one like that. It takes a little time to make an animal tame and you have to be patient. You hold out your hand to see if it will come up to you, but if you think it will bite then you keep some distance. You don't grab, just pat it on the head if it will let you. The main thing is to use caution.

You can put food out for a stray and it will hang around. If it runs off then that solves your problem.

This dogs has been out there for 3 days...that I know of. I did feed him. I put bowls of food and water out for him. He came to my door a bunch of times. Mostly he stayed on the porch where he used to live. I could get him to come up to me and take treats out of my hand...but he was too scared to let me pet him. Most likely he was abused. he's been in my apt since last night and he will let me pet him and pick him up, but he ducks his head like he's been hit whenever I put my hand near his head. He hasn't growled or snapped, he just cowers. He seems to like being held. He let me trim som mats off him.
I pretty much knew I was gonna get bit trying to capture him. I had a blanket, but he was too smart and quick for that.
The alternative was to leave him out there. I live 75 yards from a main highway. There are plenty of racoons and armadillos around here. This guy weighs 5 pounds at the most. You can feel all his bones he's so skinny.
He only bit me because he was scared. He was a house dog wandering around outside for days and days.
I had a tetnus shot about a year ago and it's very unlikely he has rabies. I'll live.

I think what you did was very compassionate. If my dog got lost/strayed.. I would want someone like you to find her.

Good for you, Q :)

I hate people who leave their animals behind, even more than people who force their animals to be out in the cold.

Thanks, Spirit.
I called 2 shelters and put an ad in the paper. Hopefully he is just lost, not abandoned.
He's a nice little doggie.
We've been calling him Stanley.

Why don't you just keep him if you like him so much? If you take him to a shelter they are just going to put him to sleep.
