Fuck this whole thread british comedy can be great but nothing will ever top the smart writing and incredible performance as american groups like ucb, mr show, the state(stella). Problem is that people that like robin williams dont seem to get it. and america loves robin williams

in short americans generally hate funny stuff.

S'ok Mirlyn. I'll make allowances for your ignorance of brilliant Canadian comedy, being from such an itty bitty small and mid-western and American (even) town. Don't worry hun, I'm sure they'll slap down some cables for television in (or maybe even point a satellite at) your neck of the woods *real* soon. :D

I'd fire up the tractor and head over for a rebuttal, but paw's already asleep. :p

Every time these types of comparison threads come up, how come it always turns into US bashing? As for comedies...Most US comedies are based on formulas because it's a type of 'short attention span theater'. Most British comedies I've seen are old. What was funny then ain't always funny now, though. As for Canadian comedies...I've never heard of any. NZ comedies, either. :p I have, however, seen plenty/heard of jokes about both places, but I digress...

US..........Slapstick/physical comedy. We grew up on it, thrived with it, and still use it to good effect.

UK..........Cerebral comedy. They grew up on it, thrived on it, and still use it to good effect.

Canada...Nothing funny there. Too cold.

NZ.........Only the sheep are laughing. ;)

One word for you all.

Spaced.

Available at play.Com for about a tenner i thoink for each series, Tres funny if you're a brit, but if ur american, then maybe just plain wierd....

spaced is splendid. and now that simon pegg has finished 'shaun of the dead' he is apparently going to be working on a third series.

little britain is a radio show that has done well in its recent first series over here. v funny sketch-type-character show, especially vicky pollard the gert lush bristolian girl what wasn't there roight and you don't want to talk to chantelle 'cos she's a slag.

the office i like a lot. i'm also a huge fan of monkey dust, extremely twisted cartoon sketch series. bizarre and at times unwatchable. teachers is mostly comedy and great fun.

it does seem that radio is a big feeder for quality brit comedy. most recently its been little britain and dead ringers that both started on radio 4.

Bob and Doug McKenzie from SCTV and Strange Brew
John Candy
Mike Meyers
Terrance and Phillip :)
Quebec
Michael J. Fox
How you pronounce the city Regina (Note to self: a good fantasy football team name could be Regina Vagina)

I'll give you the guys from SCTV...ALL of them (including the Americans), but Mchael J. Fox? He's as funny as a train wreck.

I enjoy watching both American and British comedies, though I haven't seen nearly as many British ones as I have American.

I think the real question here is why the French have never been able to dredge up a single comedy or rock band of merit.

I think u guys r givin british comedy too much credit. granted that i have seen some british comedies that r very amusing, but they dont really very "far more potent and intelligent than average American sitcom comedies". i mean, the british comedies that i like the most are Mr. Bean, which is a character that has only spoken 7 times throughout the whole season adn Mr. Bill, which is a clay character that is always being runover by things. another one is trigger happy tv.i like the fact that they r creative and random, but the whole intelligence aspect is a little too far.

i also have to agree that different cultures find different things more humourous. For example, im from brazil and there we used to watch a show called "El Chavez" and "El Chapolin" and they pretty much consisted of characters hitting each other for no reason. i found it very amusing at the time, but now when i watch it, i always think how silly it is, even though i still find it very amusing.

This is for all the latinos out there! :lol2:
