what the hell is with kids today...

My sister is 15. Her friend that's over right now is younger than she by a year. I just overheard the friend explaining to my sister how a girl is circumcized... (how she knew, I don't know.) That lead to my sister asking what a clitoris is.... and the younger one answered... and said "it's like the time I had to teach you what a sphincter is."

Um... what the hell? 15!

round these parts we (by our parents opting us in) learned what all that business is in 5th grade

you want to know what's worse? sitting in freshman health class and watching the slutty girls mislabel diagrams of their own reproductive systems.

also, i read a lot about female circumcision in other countries when i was a young teenager, because there were a lot of articles in teen-girl magazines, from more of a social-activism-and-awareness standpoint.

also, according to the almighty wikipedia, "There are over 40 different sphincters in the human body; some of these sphincters are microscopic in size.", the iris of the eye is one, and the muscle around your mouth that allows you to move it is also a sphincter.

OMG have you seen the movie "thirteen"?! it goes along these lines, but is much more extreme. now THAT was ridiculous. saw it last night on tv with my friend. it was kind of terrible.

yeah, and like, clitoris and sphincter are very tame for that age. proper biological things. it's not like she was like, "what's a cleveland steamer?"

i once had a girlfriend who claimed and believed that she'd had her first orgasm at age four. (no not by her pedophile uncle, but by something like, at least initially, incidental rubbing against a piece of furniture.)

she sure knew her body by the time i got to her (around age 24) and lemme tell ya, she was a lot of fun.

By 15 I was steadily engaged in sexual activity... isn't the going age nowadays like 9 or something?

Wow, that's really fucked up.

Doesn't she have Internet access or something?? When I was a young teen, I found the biology books at the schools library to be quite educational.

And my brothers' porn.

My kid knows his body parts buty isn't following the "9 going on 24" scenario. Without excessive shit on TV & peer pressure froma school full of under-parented hormonally deranged kids, he's happily behind the times there. I was sexually active before I was a teenager. Looking back, it wasn't a good thing.

I'm sure there is some benefit to being slightly behind the times in terms of sexual knowledge but really...until I was 14 I knew precious little about sex...I was still boinking by the time I was 16. I guess some kids were trying it out when we were still in middle school (grades 6,7,8) but they were definately a minority, even at 16 I was pretty deep in the first half of people to be doing the deed (although most of the rest joined within the same school year).

Here actually the city I live in was mentioned by Leno a few years back as the Teen Pregnancy Capitol of the US. lawl. My sister has friends that have babies... not *are* pregnant, but haaave babies. When I was in middle school, I was nuts about boys but all I ever dreamt of doing was "going out" with them, holding hands, and maybe some "kissing" which wasnt much more than rubbing our mouths together in some weird way.

Sex isn't the point though really, is it? This isn't a matter of 'being behind the times' or anything, it's not knowing your own body parts.

Exactly. Teenage pregnancy and STDs are obviously caused by sex but I believe ignorance is the real culprit.

me and my friends only found out when we went to the science center on my birthday in march. in the planetarium, part of the show explained how pluto was deplanetized. there was a general chorus of "NOOOOO!" heard from our side of the room.
