I love it when something throws a wrench in the standard evolutionary models. Not because I don't believe in evolution, but because it always comes away from these types of discoveries more coherent, more refined, more complete, and more elegant.

history and archaeology are alwys being refined and refocused, there is a constant revaluation of old finds and theories, that's what makes it so interesting.

of course that a skull candidate to be "the missing link" will most likely generate controversy because they would not be able to say if it is "human" or if it is ape, gorila or whatever species it has come from.
