Being that volcanoes are the sweat glands of the Earth it is no wonder they are cranking up. As the Earth heats up externally, it also heats up internally. This causes the magma to rise and the result is erupting volcanoes.

When they erupt, they spew ash into the air which shades the Earth. Thus they have a cooling effect similar to what perspiration has on the human body -- without the moisture and evaporation, of course. Just shade.

Mt. Pinatubo erupted for several years and the resultant ash caused a drop in world surface temperatures.

JAKARTA, Indonesia — The Indonesian volcano known as the "Child of Krakatoa" spewed ash and smoke, prompting warnings of a possible eruption, a government volcanologist said Saturday.

The mountain in the Sunda Strait, 80 miles west of Jakarta, formed after the giant Krakatoa eruption of 1883 that killed tens of thousands of people and was the largest explosion in recorded history.

"Activity at Anak Krakatoa increased yesterday and there were several small eruptions," said Surono, a leading government volcanologist who, like many Indonesians, uses one name. "We have upgraded the alert level to the second highest."

Anak Krakatoa, which means "Child of Krakatoa," is the third volcano to become active in recent weeks in Indonesia, a sprawling nation of more than 17,000 islands. The country has about 150 volcanos along an arc of fault lines called the Pacific "Ring of Fire."

Krakatoa's massive 1883 blast, heard nearly 2,000 miles away in Australia, sent pyroclastic surges of gas and burning ash which, combined with a tsunami, wiped out 165 villages and killed at least 36,417 people. It destroyed two thirds of the island of Krakatoa between Java and Sumatra.

In addition to the ash, Mount Pinatubo ejected between 15 and 30 million tons of sulfur dioxide gas. Sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere mixes with water and oxygen in the atmosphere to become sulfuric acid, which in turn triggers ozone depletion. Over 90% of the material released from the volcano was ejected during the nine hour eruption of June 15.

The eruption plume of Mount Pinatubo's various gases and ash reached high into the atmosphere within two hours of the eruption, attaining an altitude of 34 km (21 miles) high and over 400 km (250 miles) wide. This eruption was the largest disturbance of the stratosphere since the eruption of Krakatau in 1883 (but ten times larger than Mount St. Helens in 1980). The aerosol cloud spread around the earth in two weeks and covered the planet within a year. During 1992 and 1993, the Ozone hole over Antarctica reached an unprecedented size.

The cloud over the earth reduced global temperatures. In 1992 and 1993, the average temperature in the Northern Hemisphere was reduced 0.5 to 0.6°C and the entire planet was cooled 0.4 to 0.5°C. The maximum reduction in global temperature occurred in August 1992 with a reduction of 0.73°C. The eruption is believed to have influenced such events as 1993 floods along the Mississippi river and the drought in the Sahel region of Africa. The United States experienced its third coldest and third wettest summer in 77 years during 1992.

Overall, the cooling effects of the Mount Pinatubo eruption were greater than those of the El Niño that was taking place at the time or of the greenhouse gas warming of the planet. Remarkable sunrises and sunsets were visible around the globe in the years following the Mount Pinatubo eruption.

So your saying their not sweating because . . they're over invading a peaceful people because of Karl Rove has a large investment in the manufacturing of sunscreeen OIL.

At any given time, what is the average number of volcanoes that are erupting in the world?

I think that number is probably around 20, with 12-15 of those being volcanoes that pretty much are erupting all the time.

It's gonna be totally cool when Krakatoa lets go again. I watched a docu-drama on it and they showed what it looks like now. It's pretty much a huge pile of loose cinder. Gravel and rubble ... it's not even solid rock at all. When that sucker blows ... they're gonna have to move the ISS, coz it's gonna orbit debris.

That'll be cool (literally and figuratively) but I'm a bit worried about Toba given that a lot of seismic activity has recently taken place around it.

Yeah, but the margin for error in geologic time is more than that. I can't believe that an eruption of that magnitude couldn't be anticipated though. Still, there'd be nothing we could do to stop it and the effect on the global climate would be pretty extensive. Probably more than cow farts.
