"I don't like Mondays"

It's been 30 years.
Brenda Ann Spencer (born April 3, 1962) is a convicted American murderer who carried out a shooting spree at Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California on January 29, 1979. Principal Burton Wragg and head custodian Mike Suchar were killed in the attack, while eight children and a police officer sustained wounds. One of the children, who was hit in the hand, talked about the incident on a local radio station to San Diego County.

The school was across the street from Spencer's house, from which she fired the shots. She used a rifle that she had recently been given for Christmas by her father. When the six-hour incident ended and she was asked whom she wanted to shoot, she said, "I like red and blue jackets". When asked why, she shrugged and replied, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day."

She also said, "I had no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun"; "It was just like shooting ducks in a pond"' and "[The children] looked like a herd of cows standing around; it was really easy pickings." At the time of the shootings, Brenda Ann Spencer was 16 years old.

She pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, and was sentenced to prison for 25 years to life, currently being served at The California Institution for Women in Chino.

She has been eligible for parole four times and has been turned down each time, most recently in 2005. She will be eligible for parole again later this year.

In 2005, she claimed that she was drunk and under the influence of PCP, and that her father, Wallace Spencer, had sexually abused her as a child and that the state and her attorney conspired to hide her drug test results.

Spencer's crime, perceived lack of remorse, and lack of a serious explanation for her actions when captured, inspired the song "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats, written by Bob Geldof. Her quote "I Don't Like Mondays" also appears written on a wall in the 1985 movie The Breakfast Club.

You know, I don't like Mondays either but I've hardly ever killed anyone over it. :D

This woman needs to spend her 25 years serving her time. No parole. Period. Now, after all this time, she claims she was drunk + on drugs + sexually abused. Really? Did she just now realize that? Or does anyone else feel like I do: that it's a crock of shit and she's trying to discount her debt to society?

That makes her 46 years old. Wonder how old the 2 people she murdered would be today?

This is part of the immense problem of incarcerating juvies for long terms ... when (if) she gets out .... what use is she to anyone? Her entire life has been spent in prisons. She's got no concept of how to behave in polite society. From her crime, she probably never did to begin with. Sorry if it offends folk, but people (kids) like this really just need to be put down like the rabid dogs they are and removed from the general population. The taxpayer has just spent the last 30 years paying hand over fist to support someone who'll never return to society as a productive member.

She's been provided opportunities to obtain an education. Hell, 30 years? She should have a doctorate for that!

True that she probably will have difficulties adjusting to life on the outside. So will the gang-bangers who murder in their late teens. But we need to keep this trash off the streets to keep the rest of us safe.

I still remember the story S'n'P told of a guy (not sure if it was his case or not) who got out on probation and had been in jail so long, even gas pump technology had passed him by. He ended up finding a way back into jail because he knew life there, at least.

Well, don't you know? If you're doing drugs, getting drunk, or had a bad childhood, then you're the victim, not the people you murdered. It's not your fault you went on a killing rampage, it's society's fault.

I'd suggest "fry her", but with today's skyrocketing energy costs, why waste all that electricity? It could be recharging celebrities' hybrid cars. We better just put her on parole then.
