I don't think it has so much to do with marriage as with the fact this was in-vitro fertilization. She didn't have sex to get pregnant. Part of the controversy is that they're not supposed to implant that many embryos in someone as young as she is because it's too likely they'll all survive.

There is that. Frankly, considering how many children she already had, and that she's unemployed . effectivly on welfare, they shouldn't have done the procedure at all. It strikes me more as aiming at 15 minutes of fame on the part of the Doctor.
