US intelligence officials believe Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was inside a building in southern Baghdad early Friday morning when it was bombed by a numerous US bombs and missiles, The Washington Post reports.

According to a report on the paper's website, the officials believe it is likely Hussein was accompanied by one or both of his powerful sons, Udai and Kussai.

The officials were, however, unsure on whether the Iraqi president was killed or injured or escaped the attack.

One senior US official, who the report said has access to sensitive intelligence, said most evidence would support the conclusion Hussein was inside the building when it was bombarded by the Allied forces. He, too, said Udai and Kussai Hussein were in all likelihood inside the building when it blew up.

Another administration official was quoted in the report as saying evidence exists that Hussein was "at least injured", following indications that medical attention was urgently called to the area on his behalf. However, the medical condition of the leader and his sons, the official was quoted as saying, was as yet unknown.
