he has the right to (whatever i'm starting to forget things here) but you're going to toss him out of a job because he's exercising that right?

it's not the law that's steamrolling him, exactly, and this uneven application of the law should appealed vigorously.

let's all gather round and argue against dogmatic rigidities while we enforce our own! yay! you sure you ain't from texas?
Quebec...more anal, but mostly when it comes to language.

Buddy broke the law and did it on his company's behalf (as a representative). As a result, his company is being sued (successfully). So..yeah. Turf him.

Wouldn't be the first time someone's been asked to hold their dogmatic noses while they shovel the shit. :anon:

I don't know what's funnier. The false principles bandied about, or the righteous indignation.

If I work in a hotel, and a 'religious nut' (as it was so quaintly put) wanted to sleep with a goat in his room ... As his religion demands .... I have every right to turf him. Anyone question that? Doctors performing sex changes (oh, wait .. it's gender reassignment now) routinely refuse clients whom they consider 'unsuitable'. I know a tattoo artist who regularly refuses customers based on 'their thin skin being too tricky' ... and I've seen this guy tattoo an earth worm without killing it.

This doctor's only mistake was being honest about his reason and not having come up with a better excuse.

Screwing goats is usually illegal...often just bringing farm animals into a hotel room is against hotel policy.

So allowing either would jeopardize your job. Not really a good example to use.

However if Paul were to turn down legal business for the hotel that didn't infringe on their policies or refuse to do the job they paid him to then he would be in jeopardy of being turfed.

This doctor has a right to believe as he wishes & a right NOT to perform services that he is uncomfortable with. She can go find another turkey baster. She is making his life hell because she thinks she is special. She's not. He's not. She's forcing him to act in a way that offends him & it offends her when he says no.

Free market....take your money elsewhere.

Why is it a bad example .. if he's claiming it as his constitutionally protected right to practice his religion ... and I never said screw the goat, just sleep with it. He can as quickly (or even more quickly) claim discrimination ... but because the western world still sees this as taboo, noone takes his side here. After all, people sleep with their dogs in the room all the time, don't they?

And Paul has a right to prevent Christians from staying at his hotel if he's uncomfortable with them. He also has right to get fired or sued if they get offended and think they're special.

I think the hotel would have a policy against farm animals (who are not easily house trained) staying in the hotel regardless of the owners religion for cleanliness reasons.

It's a shitty comparison. Pardon the pun.

Too bad. I think Paul should have that right. Just like I can decide whether to stay there....or not.

It's not Paul's hotel, any more than it's this doctor's hospital.
The decision to refuse admission/treatment is not in their hands but that of their employers.

Using Prof's example. Prof loves dogs, but despite that..if the hotel has a no pets rule and Prof admits a client knowing he has a dog...he should fully expect to face punitive actions.

The doc doesn't love gays. The business has a no discrimination rule and the Doc refuses the client knowing the policy...he should fully expect to face punitive actions.

It's called personal responsibility, eh

If you never want to sleep well again, get a job working graveyard at a hotel desk. You will see things and meet people you wish never existed.

yep, though I never ran into farm animals...though a few of the local escorts almost qualified.

Actually, montreal is 'milder' in winter than TO. Less 'extremes'. Storms tend to pass to either side of us while TO draws them in like a magnet.
