It's referring to a virtual device, not a real one. Probably happened at startup? Two programs tried to access the same hardware at the same time, and the one with the highest priority wins. Reboot. I usually do a cold restart in similar cases, but it's probably not necessary.

it happened this moring when i started the machine up. i shut it off for the day and it popped up again when i restarted tonight.

Unable to find valid virus definitions. please reinstall norton anti-virus.
affected functionality such as virus scanning is disabled untill the problem is corrected and NAV is restarted

guess i know what i'm doing tomorrow...

Ooh! betcha a nickel they're still there, but it's probably less trouble to reinstall than to figure out what they got renamed or where they got hidden.
