About how many windows do you have open? Sometimes if you have a shitload of windows open (no matter how much RAM you have) your system will start exhibiting odd behavior.

Try this one, it allows you to specify the port. You have to know a thing or two about HTTP headers though, as it won't put them in automatically. http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.fsockopen.php
