A conservative point of view.

Too cute for words
George F. Will said:
Some say the war was justified even if WMDs are not found nor their destruction explained, because the world is "better off" without Saddam. Of course it is better off. But unless one is prepared to postulate a U.S. right, perhaps even a duty, to militarily dismantle any tyranny -- on to Burma? -- it is unacceptable to argue that Saddam's mass graves and torture chambers suffice as retrospective justifications for pre-emptive war. Americans seem sanguine about the failure -- so far -- to validate the war's premise about the threat posed by Saddam's WMDs, but a long-term failure would unravel much of this president's policy and rhetoric.

Anyone want to argue Mr. Will's credentials as a conservative? I'm not a conservative (or a liberal) but I find this sanguine.

You know its bad when George Will is not firmly planted in support of a republican president... :smoke2;

dismantling tyranny and despotic regimes would be a just and fair cause if 1/ we hadn't put the buggers in power in the first place [see: hussein, pinochet et al] and 2/ it is against international law, signed and ratified by all un members, to change another countries government or regime on grounds of dislike or human rights violations or anything other that a direct threat that would presuppose a genuine need for a pre-emptive strike.

hence the need for the credible existence of wmd's and methods of delivery.

whether iraq is better or worse off is for the iraqi people to decide, not us. whether we had a genuine mandate for removing a genuinely nasty dictator could be a matter for the governments, courts and future elections to decide.

I don't.
I still say there are, or were WMDs there.
I also heard (forgot where) that there was an underground bunker that
was up to 30 stories deep. That hasn't been found either, although that
big one between the airport, and Bagdad was sizable, I don't think that
was what the "intelligence" was referring to. :confused:
