Guys, use the balloon-thingy

The AIDS epidemic is "drastically and quickly" increasing in the South, which already faces a dire shortage of resources to combat the disease, health officials said in a new report Thursday.

"In essence, we're declaring a state of emergency in the South," said Dr. Gene Copello, co-chairman of the Southern AIDS Coalition, made up of health officials in 14 states, including Georgia. "The AIDS epidemic is out of control in the South."

Georgia officials said the findings mirror the course of the epidemic in the state.

Um, excuse my ignorance, but don't you guys have like AIDS awareness programs running? Like when they have conferences for peeps in working enviroment, or speakers going to high schools and colleges?

I dunno, here in South Africa, we've pretty much been told that in this country, 1/3 people my age (give or take about 3 years) will be dead from AIDS, within the next, (I think the stats are) 10-15 years. So luckily for us all, we've been drilled with the reality of it since Grd 8 (Std 6).

Maybe it's just awareness of HIV/Aids that's the problem  but who am I to know :(

No.. Its not awareness thats the problem. Everyone has known the facts for well over a decade. The problem is a combination of feeling bulletproof with sex and passing dirty needles. The last batch of rock solid AIDS stats were dated June of 2000:

It shows that the rates for AIDS in the US are roughly 1/2 of 1% compared to almost 9% in subsaharan Africa. There are about 1,000,000 confirmed cases with an estimated 600-700,000 people who don't know that they have it. Suprisingly, a good chunk of that is in New York City. The rates have been declining overall for years for whites... but only slightly off for minorities. Overall, the rates are higher in the south as a sheer % of population ...but so small these days that it almost gets no attention.
