So, besides the president, who else can use this plane?

halamikage and I were wondering because we work near the Hilo airport and saw this plane landing. It was weird to see because our airport is so small, our flights only go interisland.

Nobody, The VP has AF2 & there are several other planes for backup.

Any clue as to why this plane was landing in Hilo?

Did the president want to go visit the Volcano? :D

Ugh-oh, we may have to delete this post. It could be CHeney going to an undislosed location.

I thought that he supposedly did cocaine, not pot.

Isn't it possible for AF1 to fly without the president, though?

What does the Prez do in case of all out shit hitting the fan? AFAIK, AF1 is Prez only or out of service, no other options.

good timing

"Air Force One" isn't technically a plane: It's simply the radio call name for any U.S. Air Force plane carrying the president of the United States. As soon as the president steps aboard an Air Force plane, that plane is referred to as Air Force One by the crew and all air traffic controllers, in order to avoid confusion with any other planes in the area. If the president rides on an Army aircraft, that aircraft is Army One, and whenever he boards his specialized helicopter, that craft is Marine One. Civilians generally refer to the physical plane itself as Air Force One, of course, and we will in this article too.

Today, there are actually two planes that regularly fly under this designation -- nearly identical Boeing 747-200B jets. The planes themselves are designated VC-25A, with tail numbers 28000 and 29000.

Was remembering back to when Nixon left office or Kennedy was shot and the VP was in flight ,as soon as the VP defaulted to Pres the plane was then AF1 ,before that it just went by some other ID.

Yeah, the planes (both of them) fly into the AFB here regularly for maintenence (Boeing). :)

So it's possible that one of the two 747s that is usually used as AF1 had other people on it, and it made a stop in Hawaii.

Kuu, do you know the name of the airport you work by? I'd like to dig up the info on it to see how long the main runway is. It seems like if it's long and smooth enough for a 747 to be able to land and take off, then it must be an awfully large "small" airport. Maybe they planned for future growth? Maybe they needed some big planes to get all that observatory equipment out there?

Get this, Inky, our airport is named Hilo International Airport, but our flights only fly to Oahu, they don't even fly to all the islands, you have to catch a connecting flight out of Oahu to reach the other islands and the mainland. How "international" is that?! :D

For those that know your geography, that means that people flying to Maui from Hilo have to fly over Maui (which is approx. 20 minutes away) to Oahu (which is 50 minutes away), and catch a plane back to Maui (another 30 minutes).
