an eye for an eye

this is just sordid, and I don't know what to think about it

It’s the ultimate in retributive justice, and an eye-for-an-eye in the most literal sense. A 19-year-old Pakistani man who blinded his 17-year-old fiancé with acid is to be blinded with acid himself.

The punishment was ordered by a judge in Multan on Saturday and will be carried out publicly at a sports stadium. Judge Afzal Sharif justified the severe sentence in his written verdict, saying “This is an Islamic way of doing justice.''

The attack occurred last June in the eastern province of Punjab. Following what police call a minor dispute between the couple, the woman lost both eyes and had her face burned. The man’s two brother’s were also convicted of taking part and handed seven-year prison sentences.

Police say the defendant will likely try to appeal his conviction and sentence. But whether he wins or loses, it appears to be a no-win situation for women in Pakistan, who are commonly the victims of violence, including acid attacks.

What the hell is it with acid? Do people carry buckets of the stuff around or what? I can't imagine fumbling around in the pantry during an argument looking for the family supply of hydrochloric acid to huck on someone. I dare say such an act would have to be premeditated. I wonder if they are still getting married.

I grew up in a two-flat greystone in a very tough neighborhood. As a teen, I had a darkroom in the basement where I'd work through the night. During the hot summer months I'd keep the back door open to the alley, and an open bottle of acetic acid within reach. Made me feel secure. :D
