I'm not surprised, I hadn't heard of him until I got into Marc Anthonys music. It was a friend from his fan site who introduced me to Chayannes music. He's quite popular in Latin America and Spain as well as Puerto Rico and much of the Spanish community in the US so I'm led to believe.
