not to take the big business side, but to play devil's advocate.....maybe it works only a little better, but at the same time has less severe side effects?

I suppose that is possible Paul. More likely, however, is that the major drug companies are ripping off the American Consumer as they have been systematically doing for years. Prescription drugs in Canada are generally far less expensive than in the US. Do you suppose these companies are selling these drugs at a loss in Canada? Seems unlikely to me too. :D

hey, just being devil's advocate, i kow in my heart that they are mostly heartless vultures.

Genertic drugs cost like half of what the brand names cost, patents on lifesaving drugs are never shared.

I like the auto industry better, most companies when they make a safty breakthrough share the information with their compatition.

If Phizer makes a cure for breast cancer, you think they aren't going to sit on it, while people who cannot afford the drug die?

this reminds me....when i was pregnant with marlowe i had excellent insurance....luckily. i had hyperemesis and i was on a bunch of medicine. the one that worked ended up being a chemo medicine called zofran, which is roughly $30 a pill. my insurance covered it but now i still have 15 pills still in the shrinkwrap....is there some kind of charity that deals with medications? this is $450 in good medicine that i don't want to toss....any ideas?

there is a very good chance it is expired, and if it's not, people are very wary of doctored pills, if you can't find any orginization, you might want to toss them.

assholes ruin it for all of us

I'll throw this out to see who bites...

1. How much does it cost the pharmacuetical industry to bring a drug from developement to market?
2. How are those studies and research funded?

One more question...

How many times do they spend billions only to get a drug that doesn't work, or is not approved?

Thanks to Gato & PT for saving me the trouble.

Also add the cost of litigation to the above.

I agree with all of that, but they simply are not selling these drugs at a tremendous loss in other countries, which means they are profiteering at our expense. There's a healthcare crisis in America, and they are part (although certainly not all) of the problem.

40 million uninsured, I believe? I'm one of 'em.

A number of years ago I found myself in an emergency room with a broken wrist. They found out I was "self-insured" and I was pleasantly surprised at how willing they were to share information. One nurse spent 20 minutes explaining all the different types of painkillers I could take and their effectiveness, how long they lasted and possible side effects vs how expensive they were. I wonder if I would've received the same detailed information if I had simply waved a big name insurance card. :rolleyes:

ppppuuuuuullllleeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssse :rolleyes:

The only crisis is the boomers are getting old & that is scaring them (us).20 years ago we didn't have this crisis because:
A)the boomers weren't so old;
B)we didn't have 50 trillion drugs;
C)there weren't TV spots to sell prescription drugs. This, above all else, is causing our crises.

Yeah, okay. You have healthcare, everything must be fine.
TV ads, huh?

there is a health care crisis.
the hospital ER's are treating more and more people without health insurance and have become the primary care physician for most of these people. the population is getting older and sicker. our medical technology is keeping sicker people alive longer. there is a nursing shortage. prescription drug costs are completely out of hand.
..and those are just the issues off the top of my head....

Yep, TV ads. See, the doctor used to give you a script & down to the pharmacy you went. The pharmacist handed you a little brown bottle with the instructions plainly written on the side. You went home, followed the directions & within (fill in time frame here) you were well or dead. End of story.

Along comes ads for better living through chemistry. "Ask your doctor about..." This created a whole class of hypochondriacs that didn't even know they were sick. Bowels stopped up? Bowels too loose? Take ...
Indegestion become ACID REFLUX DISEASE.
On and on it went until today, former Senators & baseball players are touting little blue pills to get your dick hard. Next year, it'll be a little pink pill to get your dick hard for 24hours. "Can't get it up? Call your doctor & demand the pill from Smith Kline Beechum. We make it work more than she wants." All this when you really need to quit jerking off twice a day to internet porn & drinking a 12 pack Barney.
Nasal problems? Take a pill.
Dry mouth? Take a pill.
Scratchy armpits? Take a pill.
Hair up your ass? Take a happy pill.

Supply & demand. Thery supply it, inform us & we demand it. The insurance companies have to pay or get the state insurance boards to make 'em pay & fine 'em 2500% of the cost. This is making our insurance prices rise, creating a non-insured class. Those that can afford insurance are paying more & more & more.

All because we couldn't plop plop fizz fizz for $2.49, it wan't good enough.
