Railroads made America. They were fundamental in our westward expansion. Henry Ford changed that. Automobiles made America great. Automobiles changed the way America operates. Automobiles destroyed the railroads. Amtrak is a publically funded private mess. Freight trains are a poor choice in transportation. They suck federal dollars like an 11 month old with a bottle of chocolate milk. So, what's wrong with this nomination:

President Bush turned to railroad executive John W. Snow to be his new Treasury secretary on Monday and signaled his determination to push ahead with a new round of tax cuts to jump-start the sluggish economy.

Two things:

1) It wasn't the automobile by itself that destroyed the railroads. The government played a huge role in their destruction.

2) Railroads are so highly regulated that they're a quasi-governmental bureacracy. I don't see any difference between a railroad executive and a career bureaucrat. Both spend their careers suckling at the government teat.

Both are true but the point is we're getting a government teat sucking RR exec to run our troubled treasury when he/they can't keep the railroads in the black. Hell, why not hire Bill Gates finacial advisors? They're used to seeing positive cash flow.
