Baghdad's Anger

This densely populated area was transformed into a wasteland by what one eyewitness described as at least one massive explosion.

All this in a poor ordinary area which must have thought it would escape the worst of this war.

That illusion was soon shattered. Into the scene of confusion Iraqi emergency service workers tried to recover the dead and wounded.

'Apocalyptic scene'

Now people who are left here are getting out.

Within minutes the sense of bewilderment began to turn into defiance and also anger

The explosion in this district of Baghdad took place in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

What is impossible to ascertain now is what possibly could have been a military target in such a populated area.

By late morning the district was transformed into an almost apocalyptic scene.

Ferocious sandstorms enveloped the city in a blood-red haze, it was as though the day was turned into perpetual dusk by the fine, choking sand.

Within minutes the sense of bewilderment began to turn to defiance and also anger.

What is a tragedy for the people of Shaab is a public relations disaster for London and Washington.

"We are just trying to make a living in our shops," one man told me.

"What do they want from us, why are they doing this? Our homes are gone and are livelihoods are gone."

Flavio what's up with you? These numbers are amazingly low. 15 people were killed in that accident. In the past five years alone 500,000 children under the age of five have starved to death in Iraq. If the war continues to go this well through to its conclusion i'll be extremely grateful even though i was against action pre-war.

see..I would have probably quoted this as well...
The movements of those reporting from Baghdad are restricted and their reports are monitored by the Iraqi authorities.

..and then in a bid to lend even more legitimacy to all this I'd have probably mentioned the other side of this where it's posited that knowing the munitions expended in that run, one might expect casualties on the order of 5-10 times more had the munition been of coalition origin......

....THAT...would have been interesting...

Yeah, some apocalyptic scene. Sorry, I think we're at war without a good reason, but it's a moot point now (have I said that before?). Saddam killed over 100,000 of his own people after we left him in power twelve years ago, but we're monsters because we killed fifteen non-combatants?:moon2:

I tried to look up some info on this starvation and this was the first thing I found.

Washington keeps moving the goal posts demanding an interminable blockade for the nation where already in the last 8 years 1,200,000 have died from starvation and disease.

This after the American bombing of the sanitation, electric, and economic infrastructure of the nation in l990. Even now Washington prevents Iraq from obtaining repair parts for its oil production so it can sell some oil for food imports and to repair its irrigation and sanitation systems.

United Nations' Relief Coordinator Dennis Halliday from England has now resigned saying he can't any longer be part of the cause of the misery upon so many innocent people. He said it was correct to draw attention to the 4000 to 5,000 children dying unnecessarily every month due to the impact of sanctions.

and exactly how many deads have been in the US for starvation and disease in the last 8 years?
or Africa?
Europe?
Mexico?
Australia?
Japan?
China?
Rusia?

If Saddam had bought food, instead of banned weapons, perhaps the people wouldn't have been starving?

Unfuckingbelievable what some liberals will say to try and prove their point.

likewise osli, the death of their people could be attributed to many causes, a goverment feeding their people is what you guys would call "an evil commie", so once again, bad if they do, and bad if they doesn't.

Luis...Luis...Luis, mi compadre, an evil commie is a strong, vibrant government using it's citizens as slave labor & then feeding them last weeks ruling class leftovers.

A dictator using the citizens as slave labor & not feeding them is what we have here. If he fed them he still wouldn't be good enough to qualify as evil commie. :D

i thought it was some form of capitalism, didn't find any info regarding their economic model thou

Capitalism means we have work, get off your ass & do some. Don't like your job? Eduacate yourself. Still hate your job? Tough. ;)

i read the fact book before posting, still i can't find their economy model there.

Until the US responds *ALERT ALERT * Gonzo Propaganda *ALERT ALERT*

this is the key
Correspondents in Baghdad say there is no clear information yet on what may have caused the destruction of al-Nasser market.

amen gonz. some people forget that even those of us who support this war may still think the loss of lives is a tragedy, especially when they are innocent civilians.

just as how I've been accused of being a heartless immoral shrewd for thinking our current welfare and tax systems are in serious need of reform.
