Standings as of 9/11/04 of tight races (within 5 games) :
In the AL Central Minnesota leads by 9 games, NL East Atlanta leads by 7.5 games, NL Central St. Louis leads by 17 games (ugh ) and NL West Los Angeles leads by 6 games.
One more thing to note is that the Florida Marlins on Monday and Tuesday will play games scheduled as home games at US Cellular Field on the south side of Chicago (they're already here playing the Cubs, we just beat them today with a huge 8th inning comeback ) against the Montreal Expos (there's an attendance nightmare, they can't even draw there for White Sox games, now they've got the Expos...) and possibly 3 more there on Wednesday and Thursday (one's a scheduled doubleheader from an earlier rain out), depending on Hurricane Ivan while the Sox are out of town. If they do have to play the entire series here, the Marlins will end up having played 9 games in 7 consecutive days, all in Chicago.
Anyways, the NL Wild Card race will go right down to the wire for sure, too many teams still in striking distance and Houston and Florida are finally off their winning streaks. We've got a very slim lead right now (actually those standings are just after our victory today, so if the Giants win today we'll still be tied), but at least our schedule doesn't have too many tough opponents, although we don't have any off days left as our last scheduled off day is now a doubleheader in Miami because of Frances, so our pitching staff's gonna get pretty stretched out.
The AL Wild Card is gonna be whoever doesn't win the AL East. I bet the Yankee fans would feel like the wild card is a consolation prize to them if Boston does end up catching them. Oakland and Anaheim are gonna have to battle each other for the West, that could very well go down to the wire too, and if they knock each other out Texas is still in striking distance.
