Can you read this & still think we haven't entered a parallel universe?

Jake Olthof, 37, from nearby Santa Cruz, watched Bill Jones conduct a same-sex wedding then calmly told Jones he was under arrest, the San Francisco Examiner reported.

Jones, who says he is homosexual, recounted to the paper: "We all started walking, and he said, 'I'm putting you under citizen's arrest,' and I started laughing, and he said 'no really, I'm going to arrest you.' And I said, 'Oh great, I love a man in a uniform, bring him on.'"

"Civil disobedience is something somebody should do as an individual," Olthof told the Examiner. "If you break the law, you get arrested, you go into it knowing that ... [you should be] willing to sit in jail for what [you] believe in."

He continued: "But when the government says that we're not going to enforce the laws because we disagree with it for whatever reason, then I think that it's an assault on the rule of law."

After being bounced between the Police and Sheriff's Departments, Olthof finally was informed the citizen's arrest fell under the jurisdiction of the Sheriff.

The Sheriff's Department's position, however, is that the marriages are legal.

"The guy was serious, I mean he was dead serious. I'm the one who was laughing him off," Jones said. "But the point is, I have tickets for 'The Lion King' tonight and I didn't want to spend it in the hoosegow [jail]."

Also on Thursday, the Sheriff's Department arrested two Christian protesters for trespassing in City Hall.

Arrested for being on public property while violators of the law are allowed to remain & continue to break the law. We are seriously on the verge of anachy.

yes I did but arent there specific hours of operation for City Hall? and it did say trespassing so they may have been in an area that is for authorised personel only.

yeah. didn't feel like getting into it. if you must know, my original comment was something to the effect of how you have your knickers in quite a wad over gay marriage. but I keep forgetting it's about the law and not about the homosexuals.

No, the other thread is about the law. Most of my complaints are about the wanton destruction of cohesiveness in western culture.

Also on Thursday, the Sheriff's Department arrested two Christian protesters for trespassing in City Hall.

Nathaniel Engart, 18, and Michael Marcavage, 24, were part of a group of eight that knelt in front of the County Clerk's office and sang Christian hymns.

When sheriffs asked them to leave, the two men stayed while the rest complied.

"Two of them announced that they wanted to be arrested on TV," said department spokeswoman Eileen Hearst. "And while we couldn't accommodate their TV request, they were arrested."

I guess I'm missing the part where we stepped into an alternate universe.

City Hall is public property. City Hall was open. Americans were asked to leave City Hall.

Two Christian gay-marriage protesters were arrested for trespassing in City Hall around the same time that Sheriff's Department officials stymied a Santa Cruz man from issuing a citizen's arrest on a volunteer performing same-sex unions.

Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Eileen Hearst said that two men, 18-year-old Nathaniel Engart and 24-year-old Michael Marcavage, were arrested, cited and released for trespassing at around 3 p.m. The two were part of a larger group of eight who entered the building at around 2:45 p.m. to protest the issuance of same-sex marriage licenses.

According to Deputy Assessor Rich Hillis, the group knelt in front of the County Clerk's office and started singing Christian hymns. Sheriffs asked them to leave, and while most complied, two stayed inside.

"Two of them announced that they wanted to be arrested on T.V.," Hearst said. "And while we couldn't accommodate their T.V. request, they were arrested."

Apparently, according to San Francisco Examiner they were IN City Hall. Doesn't say where. But to be asked to leave, I would imagine they were somewhere they shouldn't have been. And perhaps you missed the part about them wanting to be arrested.

Oh, and I'm sure not that it matters, but the yahoo attempting a citizen's arrest is apparently a Santa Cruz politician. Not that it's related, just interesting I thought.

part of a group of eight that knelt in front of the County Clerk's office

Public access area. They were arrested in violation of their 1st amendment rights.

This is so much fun. Let me see if I get the rules straight/sorry, correct.

I can go to the City Hall to break the law, at the advice of the Mayor, but if I chose to pray in City Hall I am asked to move along & if I chose to not give up my right of free speech I'm arrested for trespassing on PUBLIC property.

On the other hand, should I make a citizens arrest, stopping those who are breaking the law I can first have trouble finding a law enforcement agency willing to assist & once is forced to assist they can choose to ignore the law all teh while the lawbreaker thinks no more of his actions that it may cost him a seat at a play.

Wow, no wonder I'm so confused. The line keeps moving.

what time was it they were arrested? you say it was open but I have to wonder since they were arrested. unless they asked to be or something
