When Smith — at the encouragement of some local Democrats — booked Michael Moore's movie "Fahrenheit 9/11" at one of his movie theaters, he raised a few eyebrows among his many Republican friends.

Moore's movie, a full-fledged attack on President Bush, is a favorite with Democrats and an abomination to the Republicans.

So, to show his remorse and placate bruised feelings in his heavily Republican community, Smith — whose theater drew notice in February when tickets to "The Passion of the Christ" came out numbered "666" — decided to make amends.

He donated his profit from the first week's showing to Bush's re-election campaign.

"If people want to sit in a movie theater and watch a large cartoon," Dickens said, "I'd suggest they watch 'Shrek.' "

Heh . . . none of the theaters in Panama City (there's only 2 or 3) were going to book it, but people raised such a stink, one theater gave in and showed it. The owner of the theater made it clear in a letter to the newspaper that he was doing so grudgingly.
