Bush 'Undermining UN with Aid Coalition'

By Jamie Lyons, PA Political Correspondent

United States President George Bush was tonight accused of trying to undermine the United Nations by setting up a rival coalition to coordinate relief following the Asian tsunami disaster.

The president has announced that the US, Japan, India and Australia would coordinate the world’s response.

But former International Development Secretary Clare Short said that role should be left to the UN.

“I think this initiative from America to set up four countries claiming to coordinate sounds like yet another attempt to undermine the UN when it is the best system we have got and the one that needs building up,” she said.

“Only really the UN can do that job,” she told BBC Radio Four’s PM programme.

“It is the only body that has the moral authority. But it can only do it well if it is backed up by the authority of the great powers.”

Ms Short said the coalition countries did not have good records on responding to international disasters.

She said the US was “very bad at coordinating with anyone” and India had its own problems to deal with.

“I don’t know what that is about but it sounds very much, I am afraid, like the US trying to have a separate operation and not work with the rest of the world through the UN system,” she added.

I didn't get the impression from what I read on the BBC that this was an undermining? I'd thought it was a pretty good thing, and wondered why Canada wasn't on board.

Canada can join in, I do believe the Prez left an open ended invitation for other nations to join the latest coalition of action.

...you have to be ready to go though. Get humble and join us.

Yes, the ineffective UN is busy blaming the US again, while we are already laying the fresh water lines to shore.

BUUUUHAHAHAHA
My reaction exactly.

I'm so thrilled that Bush is doing this. How dare those U.N. clowns try to publically browbeat us into believing that only THEY know how to spend OUR freaking money? Kiss my ass, homies! :finger:

I hope this is the first real step toward removing the U.S. from the U.N. once and for all.

UN halts food aid to Darfur
31 December 2004

ROME: The United Nations has suspended food deliveries to the troubled Sudanese Darfur region following outbreaks of rebel violence and retaliation by the government, it says.

Rebel attacks on government forces on Monday in the town of Ghubeish in an area bordering Darfur meant the region was unsafe for the aid convoys, the World Food Programme said on Wednesday.

It suspended three convoys of trucks carrying 1.3 billion tonnes of food aid, cutting off assistance to some 260,000 people in Darfur – described by the United Nations as one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Maybe once one side is completely killed off the UN will rush in and feed the other.

...nothing to see here, move along.
