COLD! Arrrgh

You know how when there is a wind it is colder? Say the temperature is -6. A wind of 20 km/h or so will make the temperature you feel -12. That is called the wind chill factor. You use the wind chill factor to calculate how fast frostbite will occur on exposed flesh.

Well, I've got a friend up north in Canada, in the Yellowknife region. It gets pretty cold there sometimes. However, most of the time, and this is about 95% of the time, when the temperature drop to extremes there is NO wind whatsoever. Its just a clear day with no clouds, a faint sun, no wind, and an ambient temperature of -40 to -55 or so.

Well, last winter he was bitching about something. Aparently -57 with a wind of over 60 km/h isn't nice. In fact the wind chill factor dropped to -128 Celsius (-200 F). Frostbite will set in in under 30 seconds on exposed flesh. Mind you, this does not happen often. Gee, looking into the wind would freeze your eyeballs. Ugh.
