Murder Probe As Arrested Tycoon's Girl Dies
Tuesday, 5th June 2007, 19:57

A murder inquiry was launched tonight after the two-year-old daughter of a City highflyer died in hospital, two days after being found at her family home with severe head injuries.

Tragic toddler Yanire Izaga's father Alberto Izaga, 36, was arrested and later sectioned under the Mental Health Act after she was found unconscious at his £1 million riverside flat in central London on Sunday.

He is alleged to have beaten her and smashed her head in front of the girl's screaming mother, Ligia, who kept a vigil at her daughter's bedside in nearby St Thomas' Hospital.

However, a Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Yanire Izaga was taken to St Thomas' Hospital where she was pronounced at 6.30pm this evening.

"A post mortem will be scheduled in due course. An inquest will open and adjourn in due course.

"A 36-year-old man was arrested and taken to a south London police station. He was taken to a London hospital and sectioned under the Mental Health Act on Monday.

"Officers from the Major Investigation Team of the Child Abuse Command are investigating."

Mr Izaga has not been charged.

Police were called to the family's flat in a luxury private complex close to the Houses of Parliament at around 8.30am on Sunday morning after neighbours reported screaming and shouting. Mr Izaga was arrested shortly after.

Mr Izaga is a member of the board of Swiss Re, one of the world's most powerful insurance firms, and is described as the company's head of Life and Health Products. He works in London's famous "Gherkin" tower block
