Wal-Mart Tops $1.52 Billion in One Day

Saturday November 29, 3:19 PM EST

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) — Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Saturday it hit a single-day company sales record during the traditional day-after-Thanksgiving shopping sprees, taking in more than $1.52 billion nationally.

Last year, Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, reported sales of $1.43 billion for the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Economy has been recovering for several months, Gonz. Don't you read the Wall Street Journal? Now, when it's fully recovered, do you suppose Nieman-Marcus will do the same?

Tell that to the pundits who hate, err, make that LOATHE, Bush. It's just nice to see those kinds of numbers even if it is Wally World.

I loathe him myself, no one will ever convince me that he didn't cheat his way into office. However, the economic recovery is a matter of record.

Note however that the percentage of people below poverty level has increased. I may have mentioned this here before, but the gap between the haves and have-nots is increasing (more or less by design, as far as I can tell). There is an obvious conclusion to this policy, and nobody is going to like it. Note also that I haven't said that this is Bush's fault. The responsibility lies much higher up the economic food chain than him.

The number of people in the "rich" category has also increased. That woiuld be due to population increases. That, and the fact that most immigrants aren't prepared to fully integrate & don't establish themselves in a better income bracket. Subsequent generations do better than their parents.

All this says to me is that even the upper-middle class has been reduced to shopping at WalMart this year. As chcr said, Get the figures from the more upper class stores and see if they're doing as well...My guess is no. At least not till you get to the more 'exclusive' stores...Their customers have made out well recently...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Visa USA reported on Sunday that spending on its credit and debit cards for the two days following Thanksgiving, traditionally two of the year's biggest U.S. shopping days, rose 12 percent to $6.5 billion.
Visa said retail spending on its cards was up 9 percent to more than $3.4 billion. The number of e-commerce transactions jumped 46 percent and online sales reached $338 million.

Analysts tracking the U.S. economic recovery are looking for signs that consumer confidence is strengthening as the big holiday season approaches.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Saturday that sales at its U.S. stores reached $1.52 billion on Friday, up from $1.43 billion a year earlier.

Officials at MasterCard International, Visa's main rival, were not immediately available for comment on Sunday afternoon.

But wait, there's more proof the tax cuts favor the middle classs & poor :D

For the four-day weekend that ended Sunday, BizRate.com reported that sales for the 2,000 sites it tracks totaled $820 million, compared with $735 million during the year-ago period.

BizRate.com said Monday remained the busiest day of the holiday weekend, with sales reaching $256 million, up 26% from $203 million a year ago.
