Davey Jones, Jr???

I guess this is a question for Scanty and IPH ...

Last night we were watching "American Idol" and they had a little portion to the dude who won "Pop Idol" in the UK .. Wil, something or other .. and though he was really cute, and polite ... when he got up to sing all I could think about was Davey Jones, Keith Partridge, Herman's Hermits ... and they said he had two #1 hits... please, dear gawd, tell me he isn't the best the UK has to offer? Please tell me his CD is great .... Please ... give me this one hope ... I mean, you people gave the world Elton John ... Fine Young Cannibals ... UB40 (chanting Ali .. Ali ... Ali ...) ...

He is a bit of a 50s throwback, huh? More of a jazz vocalist than anything else - pretty wasted on the UK audience that's for sure.

I think it was pretty much certain that whoever won that competition would have at least a couple of no. 1's just because of the hype. He is talented enough to stand on his own merits, just not in the pop world.

...not to mention the fact that the songs that have been stuffed in his face have been fuckin' awful.

he does have a great voice ... he does have a bit of a Bobby Darrin sound ... he's just not .. well ... "Pop Idol"-ish ... or am I missing something?

Should I invest in his CD if I can find it out here?

To be honest, I couldn't tell you. I take more interest in our monthly bog-roll usage than in pop "music".

LOL, quite a few "mums and dads" have said he sounds like Bobby Darrin. Showing your age, na'! :D ;)

I ain't that old ... I just happen to like Bobby Darrin ...

my lover stands on golden sands .. and watches the ships that go sailing ..."

*still new to the whole bitch-slapping thing but beginning to like it* :brow:

Hehe, he sang that did he? Jeez... I remember he sung that so well over here. Astonishing control in his voice. The guy has incredible pitch too; never misses a note.

I hope you guys return the favour and send Kelly over. Preferably to my house for tea and rampant sex. :p

no no no .. Bobby Darrin sang that song .. the Will dude sang something about the Sweetest something ... don't remember exactly ..

He has a great voice .. great control, that's for sure .. he didn't show a lot of range ...

here's a question that might sound stoopid .. do y'all really drink a lot of tea out there? I mean regular people .. y'all have tea time ... ?

will young blows bad 50s goats, and his equally bland runner up gareth gates hold them down while he does.

the uk still does produce great new music, none of it seen on pop idol or any other tv show usually

Yeah I know... but I thought you mentioned it because Will sang it as one of his final pieces over here. Can't get that fuckin' song out of my head though now, arghh!!!!

To all intents and purposes his talent is utterly wasted here - just a gay, 50s throwback in bad clothes crooning to pre-pubes.

God no! Of course he isn't what we have to offer!

Although I do think it's kind of interesting how the person who won pop idol here wasn't that 'pop'-ish. He's got more of a jazz voice and the fact that he still won is kind of good in a weird I-hope-we're-all-progressing type of way.

Britain has so much class music that no one abroad knows of. There are so many artists here that would really do well in the states if they were given the opportunity.

But I would stay away from the whole 'plastic-pop' scene. There's a lot of that too and it sucks ass.
