Does anybody know if a Radeon 9700 will run HL2?

Well, I tried a 'demo' of sorts, if you catch my drift;). My FPS was stable around 40-50, with occasional drops into the high 30's. Details were set to medium, res was either 640 or 800, can't remember.

My specs:
Intel P4 2,4ghz
Kingston 512Mb PC3200 DDR-RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 128Mb
Matsonic MS9147C Motherboard

Yeah, i think any box above 1,5ghz, 9600/equivalent and decent RAM could handle HL2 on at least low detail.

I think you experienced the two year old code that was made into a crappy version of the game. The final version will perform much better. I don't think you have much to worry about with those specs.
