Don't smuggle dope

It really is that simple. Don't hang out with people that would smuggle dope either. Especially into places like Indonesia.

A 27-year-old Australian beauty student is facing a firing-squad sentence in Indonesia for smuggling marijuana she claims was planted in her luggage.

Schapelle Corby yesterday remained sedated in her prison cell as her lawyer questioned whether she'll be mentally strong enough to take the stand in a final bid to win her freedom.

Second...
DON'T frickin' go to Indonesia anyway! (too many earthquakes, and rough people)

edit: oops I missed that 2nd part in the first thread.

firing squad for about 10 lbs of pot?
thats a bit harsh.
what do you get for not paying a parking ticket, life in solitary?

Who would smuggle dope into Indonesia? Its good growing land and the prices are haphazdly low. The smuggling should have been from Indonesia to Australia.

Harsh it may be. Since Indonesia is not the US (or any other less stringent country), we can't whine when they use their laws on their soil.

Isn't there evidence that they were blackmailed into doing that? Or am I thinking of some movie??

Either way, it's barbaric... I've been following this on/off, with growing horror.

Actually, I was thinking of this story which happened more recently - the "bali 9" Australians that were caught were drugs strapped to their bodies.

I see nowhere in that article that it says she even knew whoever placed the drugs in her luggage.I could imagine that someone could have put the drugs in after she let it go onto the plane and hoped to get the drugs before she picked up her luggage.

If that's the case, then we're talking about a possible worldwide drig smuggling conspiracy. Placing it in the bag, after check-in & then removed prior to the baggage carousel indicates quite the network.

All airports here offer a service where your luggage is security sealed in front of you, before you check it. I use it.

I don't know, Prof. If the baggage handlers are involved (a big if, I'll grant you, but given the claims they'd have to be) they would certainly have a way to circumvent that.

OTOH, as barbaric as BoP may find it, if this person knew the dope was there then she should have taken time to find out the consequences of getting caught. Different countries are run by different rules. Ignore them at your peril.

Unlikely. They shrinkwrap the bag, and you mark the wrap yourself with a permanent marker. The only way to remove it is to cut it. And if they were to rewrap it, it still wouldn't have your mark. You'd know immediately.

can we be sarcastic then? ;)

wouldnt have to be a hugh network. few people on either end. they know when/where the packages arrive. harder to track down who is responsible and fewer people in the loop.

I don't think we have anything like that here (don't fly much though, they could have). All they really have to do is duplicate your mark though. Not too hard with a laptop, cheap digital camera and a portable projector, I wouldn't think.

It would take too long. Unless all bags are similarly wrapped, they're not gonna take that much time and effort.

I suppose not given that most people won't use it.

So when you get your bag and its rewrapped and containing drugs its gonna be your word against the Indonesian authorities that your bags been tampered with and remember they aren't likely to beleive a drug smuggler.
