Editing free speech

Southern Discomfort
An art student at Northern Illinois University had her installation removed from the Martin Luther King Memorial Commons Free Speech Area because it offended a student who said it looked like a KKK hood, according to the Northern Star.

Jodi Balazs, a junior art education major, had her work about "social inequality, civil rights, racism the like" confiscated by police from the free speech zone because she did not have a permit and a student complained that the work was offensive.

**end**

Free speech requires a permit and the endorsement of everyone else now? America, what hath thou wrought?

That's Amerika, and I can't help but feel that you lack the proper attitude...

Fresno State has a free speech area, too, though it wasn't named after anyone. The boundaries are pretty clearly defined, too; the area within the yellow lines on the concrete is the free speech area. I never heard anyone clarify whether freedom of speech exists outside the free speech area.
