Elia Kazan is dead

Love him or hate him? A brilliant director -- he won an Oscar for "On the Waterfront" -- he also testified against friends and colleagues before the House Committee on Un-American Activities during the McCarthy era.

I try to separate the man from the work. Respect his achievements, and mourn his duplicity. :(

here's one of dozens of links out there already:Elia Kazan

I'm aware of the Venona decrypts, although I don't know their contents or history as thoroughly as you undoubtedly do. They haven't changed my opinion of Kazan. He may be your hero, but he's not mine. Kazan may have believed he was doing the right thing and followed his principles, but as far as I'm concerned, he ratted on his friends and colleagues. I've never liked rats. This doesn't affect how I feel about his oeuvre, however, which I will always respect and admire. He was a wonderful artist, and made a tremendous contribution to film.
