Breast-feeding activists in Texas are pushing the state legislature to ban baby formula manufacturers from giving away diaper bags full of freebies to new mothers at hospitals, reports Knight-Ridder.

Bills have been introduced that would ban health-care providers from passing out free formula to new mothers. Supporters of the measure say that to do so send the wrong message.

“That's like telling someone who had a heart attack that they should eat healthy food, but in case you can't, here's some McDonald's coupons,” said Marianne Baker-Bolduc, chairwoman of the legislative committee of the Central Texas Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition, a nonprofit organization.

I believe my friend that is one of the unanswerable questions

I suppose there should be a statement that "Breast Milk is Best" or something. Now that i think about it, don't can's of formula already have to say that?

Use Carnation Good Start. It's the best formulated and healthiest formula for your baby, made with the best and purest ingredients, all from a brand you trust
Oh yeah, breastmilk is best
Carnation Good Start is easy to use, and with these handy dandy bottles, you can know to the ounce how much wholesome milk your baby is getting, (as opposed to those heathens who breastfeed and count on *gasp* nature to self-regulate itself). Carnation Good Start is teh r0x0r
Oh yeah, breast milk is best

Down here, you can't get the hell out of the hospital with a new kid unless you've heard at least 582 times from all stripes of professionals that breastmilk is best. It ain't like it's a secret.

Touch a nerve?

In the hospital, I got...

You should breastfeed. We can give him a bottle if you want. Breastfeeding is best. Here, have a whack of formula and bottle samples. Breastfeed. You need your sleep, why not let us take him to the nursery overnight and we'll feed him if he wakes up. Breastfeed, though.

Nothing to do with anything, but the best one was after my 3rd...
You can't breastfeed laying down.
WTF?! :eek6:

It's an utter barrage. And it's a cryin' shame. The samples, the phone calls, the mailings, it's everywhere. Anyone slightly less educated/dedicated or slightly more lazy is gonna cave.

Wouldn't that be an udder barrage?

Ok, OK, I'll save you the trouble... :tomato:

I dunno statistics. I know a family friend cannot breastfeed her baby. Doctor's orders. The baby has a ton of food allergies.

Then in that extreme case, the doctor will prescribe a formula which will be less harmful to the baby than the breastmilk would be considering what mom eats/has eaten. That's the exception, not the rule, and doesn't warrant what's being perpetrated on moms and babes these days.

Just FYI. V2.0 and V4.0 are lactose intollerant. V4.0 much more than 2.0. He couldn't even manage breast milk, and made it this far only thanks to soy formula. Breast milk isn't always best.
