Last Saturday I was chatting with someone about comedy in film. I'm usually in the foreign film or drama section at the video store, due to the fact that Hollywood has forgotten how to make a good comedy imho. Nevertheless, I do enjoy a good comedy, so here's a list of a few of my favorites, in no particular order:
Arsenic and Old Lace -- Cary Grant in one of his funniest roles ever
Christopher Guest's mockumentaries: This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman
Lavender Hill Mob -- Alec Guinness as a timid bank clerk turned criminal mastermind
Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown -- the first Pedro Almodovar film I ever saw, and it made me a fan ever since
Jacques Tati's series of films as Monsieur Hulot: Traffic, Playtime, M. Hulot's Holiday,
Lina Wertmuller's The Seduction of Mimi, for the simple reason that it includes the funniest scene in the history of cinema (for me)
The Flying Deuces -- Laurel and Hardy join the Foreign Legion
anything by Monty Python
Ok... what are YOUR favorites?
