fifa president criticises refereeing

sepp blatter, president of fifa, has criticised referee's assistants [linesmen] following several high profile mistakes [all in italy games ;)]

he said that the standard of refereeing itself had been largely excellent but the linesmen had been 'disasters', in particular with reference to offside.

it might signal a change in the procedure used to choose referees for world cup competitions.

Waiting for them to re-call Italy, to play a one-off match with each of the finalists before the final. If they lose once, they're out. If they win both, the other two play for the place in the final with Italy.

I am an Italian supporter too but the match against South Koreans was bias against the Italian team....I hate the Ecuador referee and maybe he's now the target of the Italian Mafia..... :mad2:

And not to mention the 2 (1 netted, 1 probable) legitimate Spanish goals disallowed today, PLUS 1 more in extra time that would have been the winner...

it's bad enough that they replay events on giant screens at most grounds so the crowd can see. the rivaldo dive was the best for that, the whole stadium booed on the replay.

all the refs got to do is blow his whistle, wait 10 secs and look up.... :)

I just saw the Spain vs Korea game (re-transmited), that was a clear golden goal from spain, and a couple of offplay (offside??) in the extra time.

offside is a tricky thing to get right and you can understand the linesman not getting them 100%. but the goal disallowed for the ball crossing the line was a terrible decision. to be fair though, the korean goalkeeper had seen the flag and didn't bother attempting a save so the goal might not have happened.

Wouldn't have been an issue though since Spain would have had two other goals during proper time and extra-time wouldn't ever have been needed..

hehehehehe, that's what i love about football, after the whistle blows to end the game the debate over decisions and events can go on for ever! :D

What will be VERY interesting is how the match between Germany & Sth Korea goes... In any case you can rest assured that the refereeing will be VERY closely scrutinised..

it looks like the refereeing problems in the world cup will lead to definite changes in how world cups refs are chosen.

it appears that fifa are taking penalty area incidents very seriously, they are thinking of adding a fourth official to cover only that area, and leave the linesmen to handle offside.

they are considering politing it next season, probably in friendlies and qualifiers.
