Comedian seeks treatment for dependency on wine, painkiller

Comedian George Carlin, a counter-culture hero who gained fame with routines about drugs and dirty words, said Monday he was undergoing treatment for excessive use of alcohol and prescription painkillers.

“I’m going into rehab because I use too much wine and Vicodin,” Carlin, 67, whose latest book “When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?” is a national bestseller, said in a statement. ”No one told me I needed this; I recognized the problem and took the step myself.”

The announcement came weeks after the veteran stand-up comic caused a stir at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with a performance that questioned the intellect of people who visit the resort city.

According to media accounts of the incident, Carlin’s bit about “moronic” Vegas tourists touched off a bitter, profane exchange with members of the audience, including one woman who shouted “Stop degrading us.”

Carlin has acknowledged having battled cocaine addiction in the 1980s but said he quit on his own by tapering off the drug. He also has suffered three heart attacks.

Speaking of his current problem, he said: “My levels of use are nowhere near the worst you hear about these days; I could easily have continued functioning at a good level ... for awhile. But my use would have progressed, I would have been in deeper trouble, and I didn’t want to tolerate that.”

Carlin’s spokesman, Jeff Abraham, said the comedian entered rehab on Monday but did not know how long he would remain in treatment. He said Carlin was currently scheduled to begin a new engagement at Stardust Hotel in Vegas in February.

Carlin, long known for provocative material that puts his audiences on edge, achieved status as an anti-Establishment icon in the 1970s with stand-up bits full of drug references and a routine about seven dirty words you could not say on television. A regulatory battle over a radio broadcast of his “Filthy Words” routine ultimately reached the Supreme Court.

considering his recent Vegas exit ramblings... it all makes sense now.

ok so this explians his actions now, guess it was the hard stuff earlier in life. :)

This is one of those moments where I'm torn. With his past ramblings, I'm a little scared that if he does come out of this clean and sober he's going to make a passing glance at the world and kiss a 12 guage.

that is a scary thought but I think he has depression but the worst of his life is in the past. But you have a point that it is a scary thought

His new book is absolutely hilarious. He hasn't lost it quite yet.

Good for him for seeking help.

New book ....entering rehab...hmmm...I know Winky's the resident pessimist, but can anyone say "publicity".
Indeed.

Maybe the free publicity Wal-Mart gave him by banning the book wasn't enough.

Don't be hornin' into my territory
ya Canuckistaner!

Bummer Vic's and wine to bad he has to give em' up.

But the old codgers I've know at that age realize
the only thing they got left to do is Die
and being alive is a heck of a lot better than bein' DEAD.

A buddy of mine who is 71 quit smoking after like 50 YEARS ( been quit 3 years now) tell me WTF is he thinking lol!

Maybe he quit for a similar reason to mine. The gov't wrongly sued the tobacco companies almost to oblivion but I ain't paying the fines damnit. It took me a year to get all the way quit & it's been a year (today now that I notice). Still waiting to smell stuff & taste stuff & stop snoring & have my sinuses clear up and....

Carlin, I agree with Unc. It explains alot. It's also a ramification of his wifes death a couple of years back.

Aw C'Mon Gonz aren't you gonna sing all the praises
of having quit smokin'?

My Buddy packed on 35 pounds from stopping the evil ciggies he's still fighting to get rid of all of it.

So'd you turn into a fattie from quitting?

At least now he doesn't have to spend his whole social security check on a carton of smokes.

He's somewhat well off but he did
mention that as a LARGE factor!
He quit right after the latest tax hike on the coffin nails.

There is a family across the street with four, pack a day smokers,
their ciggie bill is simply astounding, outrageous in fact!!!
