BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - President Bush made a surprise Thanksgiving visit to American troops in Baghdad Thursday, flying secretly to violence-scarred Iraq to thank U.S. forces for serving there. It was the first trip ever by an American president to Iraq - a mission tense with concern about his safety.

"You are defending the American people from danger and we are grateful," Bush told some 600 soldiers who were stunned and delighted by his appearance.

The president's plane - its lights darkened and windows closed to minimzie chances of making it a target - landed under a crescent moon at Bagdad International Airport.

Bush flew in on the plane he most often uses, and White House officials went to extraordinary lengths to keep the trip a secret, fearing its disclosure would prompt terrorist attempts to kill him.

The news of Bush's trip was not released until he was in the air on the way back to the United States. "If this breaks while we're in the air we're turning around," White House communications director Dan Bartlett told reporters on the flight to Baghdad.

I notice you pulled your thread about hoping Hillary got killed for doing this...Just so you could make a nice thread about george saying thanks in person without showing your hypocracy. What a good little republican you've become...:disgust2:

Ahhh...my mistake...Your thread remains and your hypocracy shows.... :D

HypocrISy :p

What hypocrisy? I think Hillary is a bitch. I didn't know George was going. They're both there for a photo op. He supports the war. She opposes it. I despise her. He's only a twit.

The terrorists missed their big chance....

Did anyone see the recent home video of a terrorist in Iraq firing a shoulder-to-air missile at a civilian DHL cargo jet? The missile launched out of the tube, into the air and found the wing of the intended target. Air Force One tiptoed into nighttime Baghdad with lights out and in radio silence, ensuring that it would not meet a similiar fate. Too risky and potentially life-threatening to be considered "propaganda" or even a "photo op".

President Bush landed in Iraq on Thanksgiving because he wanted to be with the enlisted men and women who ultimately protect the U.S. A snip from today's speech: " I bring a message on behalf of America: We thank you for your service, we're proud of you, and America stands solidly behind you. Together, you and I have taken an oath to defend our country. You're honoring that oath. The United States military is doing a fantastic job. You are defeating the terrorists here in Iraq, so that we don't have to face them in our own country. You're defeating Saddam's henchmen, so that the people of Iraq can live in peace and freedom.

"By helping the Iraqi people become free, you're helping change a troubled and violent part of the world. By helping to build a peaceful and democratic country in the heart of the Middle East, you are defending the American people from danger and we are grateful."

Some will not believe that we fight the war on terrorism over there so we won't have to fight it over here. They like to cling to their visions of the way things were before the U.S. was attacked.

Of course, the "on behalf of US we're proud of you and stand solidly behind you" may've been a stretch--as reflected by the negative, non-supportive, and yes, even seditious comments read in similiar topics... :winkkiss:

i'm sorry but if you don't think that this was a photo op aimed at improving his poll position [like his state visit to the uk last week] then i think you are being slightly naiive.

I thought he went to the UK to help prop up Tony Blair? :grinyes:

Yes, it was a photo-op. Yes it could be called propaganda, but, no, it couldn't be called safe. As for the DHL plane, they fly a strict routing, and land at predictable times. Even if they were on radio silence, in the dead of night, they stood a good chance of buying a SAM. Now some of you make it sound like this was nothing more than a joy-ride.

The only time Blair can look good is when he's stood next to Bush...

I certainly had no intention of making it sound like nothing but a joy ride, my comment was amazement that this guy will risk his life (and the lives of countless others on board the plane) to get a bit of propaganda before the elections.

Countless others? His main security detail, the aircrew, and 3 embedded reporters doesn't add up to countless. As for risking lives, remember, his was on the line as well. My personal take on this was Cheney made him do it. :D

the bush visit has probably done blair more harm than good in this country, bush is certainly less popular than blair and being associated with him would probably result in lower popularity in the polls for the pm.

maybe he should run for president... :D

i know im new here, but ris, im sure that the president did have the polls in mind, but im sure that it was just a very small portion of the reasoning behind flying over to baghdad, he wanted to spend thanksgiving with our troops, who have been over there for a very long time with little to no contact with their families, although he risked his life, i do respect him for taking that risk, and for spending this holiday with our troops. dont badmouth him for that ris, i think your way out of line with your statement about our president. And since your from the UK, i see now why you dont mind bashing our president, i dont see your leader(s) going over and visiting your troops inside hostile territory. lol

I think you had better take a look at all the fine things this president is doing for our troops. Hes stripping their benefits faster than anyone can imagine. And hes doing this while asking us to get behind him and support our troops. The man is a walking contradiction. This was ENTIRELY for campaign value...

well of course it was for campaign value. but it was also for troop moral. and it was DEFINITELY a massive home run. and just a great jesture. go ahead and hate the man but this one worked real well with the masses. I give him full kudos for it myself. great move. the guy giving the orders from the other side of the world shows up in enemy territory on the day the soldiers most want to be with family to hang with them rather then in his own little compound in texas with babs and big george. bravo. now do you think this was actually his idea or carl rove's?

as much as i'd like to believe that a the us president is a thoughtful, generous and selfless soul, handing out random acts of kindness from airforce one like a pie-free santa, he is a politician. and politicians don't do anyhting without checking how it will look first.

you are right, i don't mind bashing your president. i also don't mind bashing my prime minister, home secretary, foreign secretary, any number of cabinet ministers, opposition politicians, foreign leaders, foreign politicians, diplomats, civil servants and anyone else who is passing. rank is no priviledge to criticism.

as for not visiting iraq, our foreign secretary jack straw made a surprise visit to baghdad on 26 november. :p
