(AP) — Former President Ronald Reagan's health has deteriorated, the White House has been told.

The White House was informed that the 93-year-old former president's health had changed significantly in the past several days, a person familiar with Reagan's condition said Saturday.

Reagan has been out of the public eye since disclosing a decade ago that he had Alzheimer's disease. He has lived longer than any other U.S. president.

Rumors about Reagan's health arose Friday and his office in California said it had received more than 300 calls over the past two days.

"He's 93 years old. He's had Alzheimer's disease for 10 years. There are plenty of rumors. When there is something significant to report I will do so," the Reagan family's chief of staff, Joanne Drake, told The Associated Press on Saturday.

White House officials also checked on Reagan's health Friday. The White House was told his health has deteriorated and "the time is getting close," according to the person familiar with Reagan's health, who did not want to be identified out of sensitivity to the family. "It could be weeks. It could be months."

A bit shorter than weeks or months, I'm afraid.

Former President Ronald Reagan Dies at 93

WASHINGTON - Ronald Reagan (news - web sites), the cheerful crusader who devoted his presidency to winning the Cold War, trying to scale back government and making people believe it was "morning again in America," died Saturday after a long twilight struggle with Alzheimer's disease (news - web sites), a family friend said. He was 93.

He died at his home in California, according to the friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

:( OMG, I don't believe it, this is truly a tragic day. He was truly a great man, I wish I had time to tour his home earlier this year during my trip to Moline, IL.

A few hours ago a friend of ours called and told us that one of the coaches from one of our bowling alleys in our zone who we know very well lost her son to suicide Thursday night.

Yep its true. The first president i really liked. and i even got to meet him.

I guess he passed on this afternoon. Shame, I've always liked him. Don't know why in particular, maybe because he was in office when I was born. *shrugs* But it seems he had a good run, was the oldest living president and had a good long bout with Alzeihmers, lasted longer than some.

/me offers condolances and hopes he can rest in peace

*salutes the Gipper*

General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

Maybe he was a good president, hence all your sadness.

We would party if an ex-president (or president) die.

Whether you agreed with him or not, he was an excellent speaker (and you always knew where he stood) and probably the last polite politician in America. I always thought he was a genuinely good person, and I don't feel like you can say that about many politicians either.

and prolly the only person in the universe who could tolerate Magaret Thatcher without the use of valium.............brave man indeed.

I am a liberal, myself and strongly disagreed with his economic policies (which proved out by failing) but all the same I respected and liked Ronald Reagan and I am saddened by his death.

Failed???
Between Regan, and Bush SR. , that's why Clinton had it look so good for him.
It took Clinton 2 terms to get it all screwed-up again.

Funny how when anyone mentions Jimmy Carter, all the recession and unemployment is all his fault (what happened during his term) but when a Democrat is as successful as Clinton was it's all the fault of a Republican who does nothing but slash taxes and increase spending.

I'll mention it then.
Nope I don't think it was "all" Carters fault.
I considered myself to be a DEM. at that time, and thought it was
great the the Gov. of my state made Pres.
I think Carter inherited a lot of stuff he had to try to straighten out
from the previous admins. I just don't think he did a very good job with it.
In fact it was his reign that made me switch parties, and vote Reagan.
I just didn't see that Carter did much of anything (good or bad) except
the hostage thing. (neither did Ford)
At least Reagan made some dramatic changes in the world.

There sure has been an effort to rewrite Hx and the legacy of Ronald Reagan.

I have seen several op/ed's that make some crazy accusations and bold lies. I have seen those same opinions getting repeated as being facts, all over the I-net, by the spoon-fed left.

The left is in melt-down mode right now. They need to be saving their strenth. Bubba has his legacy-wishlist coming out in few weeks. They'll have their hands full keeping all those spins from swirling down the toilet

POTUS Ronald W. Reagan will not only be remembered as a Great President. He will be remembered as being the right man at the right time, a legendary good man for Hx.
