He was trying to rob the elderly. Its a felony in some states, and is one of the most heinous non-violent crimes you can do.
 
My Mom was in her late sixties and some punk bashed her in the back of the head
knocked her to the ground and took her purse, in a grocery store parking lot.
She was afraid to go out alone for quite sometime afterwards.

Yeah, fry the bastard.
 
Kinda reminds of that one guy that tried to carjack a minivan full of karate students.
