What IP/gateway address do you get in the computer connected to the Internet?
Does the modem happen to have more than 1 ethernet port?

If certain conditions are met, it could be possible (and easier) to connect the laptop straight to your connection than to route traffic through a pc.

If you don't use a router, and just want one wire, you can use
a 'crossover' cable.
Of coarse you'll probably have to make it yourself...they seem hard to find in stores.

yep... crossover cables... made enough of those in my day. There are a lot of diagrams to help online.

If you want to buy one online there are also many sites that will sell you one at varying lengths.
