so me and the kids are watching the 2002 World Music Awards last night and Ja Rule wins for rapper category ... he gets up on the stage, award in hand and says "y'all, I first need to give it up to Prince Albert ..." ... I was cracking up! Can you just imagine being royalty - being used to a certain decorum - and this dude comes and gives you the best props he knows how ... :D

That was so very cool

i don't think any self-respecting royal has named their child albert full in the knowledge of the future headlines :D :D

some of this is kinda-guesswork but i'm pretty sure that it's right...

prince albert was queen victoria's husband [mid-late 1800s]. he was well-loved by the public and his name is found on many things still today [victoria and albert museum, albert bridge, both in london].

he was also famed for having a pierced , and the particualr manner of teh piercing is known as the prince albrt.

the piercing is rumoured, or legendary, for enhancing sexual pleasure. many men swear by it.

I was wondering about that. I knew of the Prince Albert of old as well as the modern connotation of male genital piercing. I didn't know he was giving up props to his pierced meat axe. For all I knew, there was another rapper out there named Prince Albert.. or a living royal that I wasn't making a connection to.

Price Albert, y'all, is the crown Prince of Monaco ... his sisters are Stephanie and Caroline? The son of Prince Rainier III ...

and Ja Rule is a rapper .. he did the remix "I'm Real" with Jennifer Lopez ...

*can't believe Rob, of all people, didn't make that connection* :D

a. Monaco is an insignifigant hyper expensive postage stamp of a city state with 40,000 and a casino. I didn't know they still even had a monarchy... let alone a Prince Albert. I'm pretty sure that the guy is fairly continental and up with the times. Its hard to be a playboy and a fuddy duddy. Hes never done anything big enough to hit the papers or get his face splashed on the world scene radar. I can't name the ruling royalty families of any european power outside of jolly ol' england and the vatican. General Princess Di worship keeping her face in the tabloids assured that it would be etched into my brain.

b.Was this music show held in Monaco? Europe? It didn't specify in your post. How was I supposed to know?

c. Never heard of the world music awards either. I don't watch them... nor the grammys, emmys, tonys, peoples choice, cannes, sundance, oscars, or the MTV self ass kissing awards. I find the teleprompter jokes and acceptance speeches to be less comfortable than a colon cancer exam.

d. Never heard of Ja Rule. The only rappers I know are RUN DMC... and those guys broke up 15 years ago. I have never tuned into a rap station and I stopped watching MTV in 86. I have missed hair metal, grunge, boy bands, titny spears, shania, garth brooks and the revival of don ho mania.

e. Never heard a JLo song in my life including 'Im real'... so thats no help.

f. Did anyone make the connection? anyone?

Actually, yes, I did. But Rob, wow-what's up with that reply man?

I've seen that awards show also. It's interesting because you get to see more music groups than just those you find in your own country.

And he's actually cool-he gives a speech and all, I think he's pretty hip to do that kind of thing.
