Grading Scales

Ok, reading the Canada Sucks page and came across this tidbit.

In the US, a 64% or below is an F. In Canada, a 49% and below is an F. In Canada, a 60%, which will fail you in the US, will get you a C+. An 80%, which is a C in the US, is an A- in Canada.
Had a link, Here

A (85-100%)
A- (80-84%)
B+ (75-79%)
B (70-74%)
B- (65-69%)
C+ (60-64%)
C (55-59%)
D (50-54%) - Does not transfer
F (0-49%) - Does not transfer

Now, I know alot of the public schools are going to the accelerated grading scales around here, which is this.

  • 93 – 100 A
  • 85 – 92 B
  • 77 – 84 C
  • 70 – 76 D
  • 69 and below F
My college still uses the older scale, as well as quite a few of the other public schools, which is this.

  • 90 – 100 A
  • 80 – 89 B
  • 70 – 79 C
  • 60 – 69 D
  • 59 and below F
Thats the grading scale I've had everywhere I went to school. So, my question is this, is the average grading scale actually like that in Canada and other places?

Oh, and for the record, D's don't count for transfer credits or for core classes at my college either, so it may as well be 69% and below is an F.

It depends on the institution

University of British Columbia
A 85-89%

Consistently excellent work demonstrating high degree of analytical ability, creativity, and clarity of expression.

A- 80-84%

Excellence noted in many aspects of the work, which demonstrates analytical ability, creativity and clarity of expression.

B+ 76-79%

Work demonstrating diligence and effort above basic requirements.

B 72-75%

Solid work meeting the basic course requirements.

B- 68-71%

Acceptable work meeting the minimum of expectations but demonstrating limited performance.

C+ 64-67%

Work which casts doubt as to the student's ability or readiness to meet course requirements.

C 60-63%

Work barely permitting a pass in the single course.

F 00-59%

Failure.

So then there is no D in that scale, but an A goes all the way down to 80. Do you use the 4 point scale in GPA? Would an 80 still get you 4 points?

I used to be graded from 0 to 100 in the Bs. Now it is from 0 to 10 using one decimal fraction.
