Several years ago, Chicago had a similar problem. NYC has its share of summer days. London, Paris & our EU brothers are suffering the worst heatwave in their recorded history. Nasty stuff for the region. WHat is beyond me is why in all those cities, and more, people want the government to step in & fix things. What the hell does the guvmint have to do with too hot/too cold/too rainy/too dry/etc? You can't beat ma nature.

OH, and watch out for a sudden rise in the French temps (nuke meltdows are a bitch)

PARIS (Reuters) - France called emergency talks on Monday on overheating at nuclear power plants as Europe's heatwave entered its second week, with officials torn between output cuts and allowing hotter water to pour into rivers.

After Paris sweltered through its hottest night since records began, a doctor in the city said more elderly people were dying from the heat and accused health authorities doing little about the crisis. Temperatures have hit around 104 degrees Fahrenheit in the past few days, spelling trouble for France's nuclear reactors, many of which are cooled by river water. The plants pour water back into the rivers but only once it has been cooled to a certain temperature to protect the environment.

What's there to do really about the crisis? Go into your local supermarket and sit down in the milk asile. That'll keep you cool. If you get thirsty, just buy yourself some milk :D Go shopping, go to the local pool. Go down in your basement (assumption that you have one) and then lie down on the cool concrete floor.

Errm the authorties over here hand out water and whatnot to travellers stuck in traffic jams, train go-slows etc.

And before one SINGLE brit complains about the railways blame your government! My dad is an ex railway man so I got the inside track here. Britains railways are a 'one size fits all' system that lets both heavy goods and freight trains to use the same stretches of track as high speed passenger trains. This means that they arent as rugged as our European friends and as such they are prone to cracking. Now if you want to wait a few years for your next train just so we can change that, its just dandy with me. Otherwise QUITCHUR WHININ!
