Ga. Judge, Court Reporter Shot to Death
ATLANTA (AP) - A judge and a court reporter were shot to death Friday at the Fulton County Courthouse and at least two others wounded, authorities said. A search for the suspect was under way.

Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor confirmed that Superior Court Judge Rowland Barnes and his court reporter were killed. He gave no other details in announcing the deaths in the state Senate.

The judge was shot on the eighth floor of the courthouse, while one deputy was shot on a street corner just outside the building, said Officer Alan Osborne with the Atlanta Police Department.

Witnesses said the gunman carjacked a car and authorities were searching for several vehicles reported stolen in the area.

Fulton County Sheriff's Lt. Clarence Huber identified the suspect as 33-year-old Brian Nichols, who was being held on rape charges stemming from an incident in August.

Grady Hospital reported that it was treating two deputies. It was not immediately known the extent of their injuries.

"I saw one person on the street that they were performing CPR on," said court reporter Amy McKee.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution newsroom staff was told that Don O'Briant, a features reporter for the paper, was beaten by the suspect outside the courthouse. Mike King, an editorial board member for the paper, said O'Briant was taken to Grady.

All the judges in the building were locked in their chambers. The courthouse and other buildings in downtown Atlanta were on lockdown. Traffic in the blocks surrounding the courthouse was backed up as police cruisers flooded the area looking for the suspect.

Among cases handled by Barnes was the fatal 2003 car wreck by hockey star Dany Heatley that killed his 25-year-old teammate Dan Snyder. Heatley pleaded guilty and was sentenced Feb. 4 to three years on probation and ordered to give 150 speeches about the dangers of speeding.

*sigh*

And the area where they think this moron is running to is where I am at the moment, right near my office. Yippee.

I heard something about that on FoxNews in the cafeteria. How close were you to it Homey and Unc? sad that this shit happens. Bastards I hope they get death for killing the judge

A radio news person who I wasn't listening too caught my attention saying;

[almost quote] "The Atlanta schools are in lock down because a person who is willin gto shoot a judge & a police officer is willing to take children hostage"[/almost quote]

While this may be true, it's a rather long leap from "I hate the judge" to "let me kill some kiddies".

We weren't. It happened downtown. However, he's suspected to be running into the area where my office building is.

So it was a service weapon wrested from a female police officer that started off this whole episode.

Let us all hope they kill this guy in the process of arresting him. Otherwise we all get to pay to house clothe feed and provide medical care for him for the next 25 years.

The scuttle is that he made up near us somehow. The police presence is extra heavy everywhere and the kids daycare was under lockdown.

that was odd...but i suppose i'm glad they are being cautious.

This guy is cold blooded, and ruthless.
I don't think he'd have a problem taking kids as hostages, or killing them.
These types usually won't be taken alive anyway, but you can bet he won't
sit in jail as long as some. Around here they like to go a head and get
rid of them if they kill cops, and a judge... well I don't think he'll be with us
either way, very long.
I'm wondering at this point what area he's in, and how long before they get him.
Shit he could be up my way by now, or father. :eek13:
The police presence IS Very big, even around here.
I can't remember when I've seen so many.
They want this guy bad now.

It would be best if he realizes that he's the walking dead and turns the gun on himself, before he hurts or kills anyone else.

ATLANTA - Police searching for a man suspected in a courthouse triple slaying said a U.S. customs agent was discovered shot to death in north Atlanta on Saturday, and his blue pickup truck, pistol and badge were missing.

No definitive link...so far.

Is there any question who did this?

"Brian Nichols is in custody. He turned himself in without incident. Everybody is safe," said Officer Darren Moloney of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Somebody school this man of PR.

yep, but I'm tellin' ya man....He ain't gonna sit for 20 years.
They'll have him in the chair in 5. (well some kinda execution anyway)
or he'll meet with an "unfortunate" accident in prison.

Just be glad hes off the streets. They still have to try him for rape and kidnapping (which Im assuming needs to start all over again since he killed the preciding judge involved) then they can try him for 3 or 4 counts of murder, assault, car theft and who knows what else. Yeah this one will be in the courts for a while. From what I understand this whole thing started because they dont allow them to handcuff or shackle defendents in the courts in Atlanta because it might influence the jurry against them. Maybe in this case we need to find a way around that rule...
