Police: Man Put Wife In Homemade Prison

Couple's Youngest Of Three Daughters Finds Mother Dead

ELKTON, Md. -- Authorities charged an Elkton, Md., man Monday who allegedly admitted to imprisoning his wife in the couple's house, Baltimore TV station WBAL reported.

John Joseph Dougherty, 52, allegedly told police he kept his common-law wife, Mary Elizabeth Kilrain, 46, locked in their bedroom for the past six years. According to charging documents, Kilrain weighed 81 pounds when officers found her.

According to charging documents, Dougherty admitted he was "neglectful of her basic needs which included food and hygiene."

Neighbors told WBAL they were shocked to learn of the arrest. They said the couple's three daughters -- ages 10, 13 and 16 -- often play outside.

The couple's youngest daughter brought a drink to her mother last Friday, but found Kilrain's body cold, stiff and unresponsive on her bed in a homemade prison surrounded by moldy food and her own excrement.

According to charging documents, Dougherty allegedly told his daughters not to call 911 until he returned home from work in Delaware, about 45 minutes away. Police said Dougherty called 911 Friday morning.

The 13-year-old daughter said her mother had an aneurysm in 1999 and constantly yelled and screamed at the children. As result, Dougherty locked Kilrain in a homemade prison in a bedroom and no one paid attention to her until she banged the door with her cane.

Police said they saw 50 to 70 marks on the makeshift prison door in addition to holes in the wall consistent with the handle of the broken cane they found in the room. Local sheriff's detectives described the scene as among the worst they have ever seen.

Authorities charged Dougherty with involuntary manslaughter and abuse/neglect of a vulnerable adult family member. He is currently being held at the Cecil County Jail on $350,000 bail, and the children have been transferred to foster care.

Neighbors told WBAL Dougherty also lived with his girlfriend and her two children.

Couple's Youngest Of Three Daughters Finds Mother Dead

ELKTON, Md. -- ...allegedly told police he kept his common-law wife

The headline is incorrect & misleading. It should say "Police: Man Put girlfriend In Homemade Prison."

Common-law is recognized virtually nowhere. Another attempt to cheapen marriage.

So...he had two common law WIVES by law. So...can we get him for polygamy too?

WTF is wrong with the other wife?!?!

Trust me. You don't want to deal with twins. Moan the wrong name at the wrong time, and they'll share your balls out between them.

It would seem to me that if a girlfriend started to rant, rave, and bounce off of the walls enough to require caging, I think I would try to ditch that girl.

Don't call me... I'll call you. *disconnects phone*
