On January 19th of this year Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger allowed the first death sentence to be served in three years, and the first under Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. That is almost copied straight from a news site (because honestly if I hadn’t, there’s no way I’d have been able to spell Arnie’s name!)

Anyway, I recently caught an ad for a movie on Court TV called The Exonerated. It’s based on true stories of several people who spent years on death row for crimes they didn’t commit. The original version was a play which inspired my interest in the subject of the death penalty. I specifically remember one guy who spent something like 20 years on death row before finally being cleared.

Now before someone jumps all over me: I’m not saying that the guy who was just executed in California was innocent. But does anyone think it’s acceptable that even one innocent person could be executed? I think it’s about time this country joins the rest of the civilized world and adopts a more humane approach. For those of you still on the fence on this issue, I’d check out this movie, because if it’s anything like the play the personal stories will astound you. I think it airs on January 27 (but check courttv.com just in case I’m wrong). And if you have thoughts on this issue, I’d like to hear them.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

I'm sick and tired of this "join the rest of the civilized world" horseshit. Anytime people want to start comparing apples to apples, feel free.

Read a few of these news stories to learn about the perfect example of a man who has proven he can never be reformed.

If we limited the endless appeals and had people executed within a few years of their conviction, the death penalty would be a much more cost-effective option. The only reason it costs more than a life sentence now is because of all those appeals. The man who just got executed here in California did his crime close to 20 years ago. I also say we need to get rid of lethal injection, because it's a quick and relatively painless way to die. How's that punishment? California used to use a gas chamber, in which the prisoner would slowly suffocate and suffer greatly in the process. But of course, the rights of a convicted multiple murder take precedence over the rights of his victims.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

does that mean we can put Manson to Death since he is in CA? also 20 years? I think 2 or 3 appeals is fine. we dont need to keep someone on death row for 20 years. much more cost effective to either release or kill.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

Manson, or others, must be prsosecuted & have their sentences given under their current law. If the law changes for the rest of us, it won't change for those already imprisoned.

But does anyone think it’s acceptable that even one innocent person could be executed?

After multiple courts & umpteen lawyers have seen the case...it's highly unlikely that will happen.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

Manson did have a death penalty... but there was a national moratorium on the death penalty which commuted all sentences to life. Now that the death penalty is reinstated, the old convictions still remain at life.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

Did he? Grandfathering laws only works one way, in the favor of the bad guys.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

Don't talk to me about civilized and sympathetic. Murderers are neither to their victims, and forfeit all rights in my book, including the right to consume oxygen.

Off with their heads.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

And yes, Manson was sentenced to death. When California overturned the death penalty, his and all other death sentences were commuted to life with parole. That's why every seven years he comes up for denial. He ain't goin' nowhere. The only one of the Family members with a glimmer of hope to ever see daylight is Leslie Van Houten.

Re: The Death Penalty and Schwarzenegger

My country doesn't do the death penalty, and I'm glad. I'm against it for a milieu of reasons, potential innocence being one of them.

We've recently had two very high profile murder cases overturned here. Because of unequivocal DNA proof of innocence. Both most certainly would have been sentenced to death (one actually was), and with the amount of time passed, they certainly would have been put to death. So. Yeah. One of the reasons I'm utterly against death penalties is potential innocence.

Wikpedia excerpt: Manson himself was not present at the Tate killings, but he was convicted of murder on January 25, 1971 and on March 29 was sentenced to the death penalty. The death sentence was later automatically commuted to life in prison after the California Supreme Court's People v. Anderson decision resulted in the invalidation of all death sentences imposed in California prior to 1972.

Manson himself did no killings but he drugged up the family and coerced them to kill. that is jsut as bad. Did not know he was supposed to get death though. I thought they gave him life without parole?
