So this lady that I work with is telling me about her puter problems, it won't boot in anything but safe mode, Windows 98, and it started acting funny after her son came home from college over christmas. I figure her son probably did some porn surfing, picked up a virus or some nasty spyware or something and tell her no problem, bring it in, I'll take it home and look at it.

Now, it's in the trunk of my car. She has no antivirus software, it's a compaq presario 5150, which is a K6-2 350Mhz, 32mb of Ram, and I'm supposed to make it run faster. Just shoot me.

Run the newest anti-virus you can find, defrag the drive, and add in a 64MB stick of ram. You can pick up 64MB sticks pretty cheap if you look around...

I've got 3 or 4 of them laying on my desk at home, run the newest antivirus? On a 350Mhz machine? LOL......

5150, Van Halen used it as a title of one of their albums, I think it's police code for a crazy person or something along those lines. I'm thinking she was just crazy for buying a Compaq myself....
 
I'll agree with you that far. Never hear the term before.

As for the machine, I know exactly why she bought it. It came with $800 of preinstalled software. I dealt with many of them. Get a list of everything she actually uses and flush the rest. That'll easily double it's speed.

I guess I really shouldn't say much. I let my wife order a dell a couple years back.
 
Compaq's are good machines ... as far as that goes. It's when you try to change the preinstalls or upgrade that everyone runs into trouble.
 
What? I asked to be put out of my misery. :D

Actually, at the time I bought it, I couldn't have built a machine that had what it had for the money. It's still that way now, pretty hard to convince someone to put 1,000 into a custom built when Dell sells em the same stuff for 699 delivered.
