is my monitor burning out?

my monitor gets lighter, then darker, with horizontal lines flickering..

ive had it since 1999... it's been on for most of that time...

is it time for a new one, or is this a problem i can fix?

Sure sounds like its doing its "XX minutes to Self Destruct..." I'd start looking at new ones if I were you. Make sure you weren't experiencing power fluctuations when it happened though. They could cause those behaviors...

check connections, both power and video card, make sure they're tight.

You don't happen to have it plugged into a DVD decoder card, do you?
