Dictionary.com apparently is a bit behind, or it's another perversion of a word, but most likely a little of both.

The definitions they provide actually fit pretty well. All those things I quoted are passed around in repetition, which is how they become well-known. Think of all the times something's been posted or e-mailed, then forwarded to all their friends, then their friends' friends, etc.
